  • Mr. Smith Goes to the Shrine Bowl
    Tennessee State
offensive tackle Lawrence Smith has accepted an invitation to the 2002 East-West Shrine Game, an annual showcase for the nation's top NFL draft-eligible prospects. The game is slated for Jan. 12 in Palo Alto, Calif.

''With this, Lawrence just falls in line with those other guys that were invited to the Blue-Gray Game and the Senior Bowl,'' TSU Coach James Reese said, referring to the trio of offensive linemen Bennie Anderson, Antoine McNutt and Michael Thompson who were seniors on the Tigers' 11-1 squad in 1999 and went on to make NFL preseason rosters last year. ''He's going to get an opportunity.''

Cornerback Ligarius Jennings also played in last year's Senior Bowl and is on the practice roster of the Detroit Lions.

  • Disputed Finish
The "no contest" designation on the outcome of the Sept. 8, Morehouse vs. Stillman football game has not been agreed upon, as indicated in a press release from the Stillman College sports information office.

Morehouse Athletics Director, Andre Pattillo, has a different interpretation of the meeting to determine the outcome of the contest halted by lightining in the fourth quarter with 7:15 to play and Morehouse leading 24-21. Morehouse had the ball with fourth-and-18 yards to go at the Stillman 30-yard line.

Patillo said that in front of game officials, Stillman AD Dr. Richard Cosby was willing to let the game stand and would look forward to playing in Atlanta next year. After the lightning had stopped, the Stillman players took the field anticipating that Morehouse would return. By this time, Morehouse players had undressed and showered.

The two athletics directors have not communicated since the meeting during the weather delay. Stillman announced that the game should be declared a "no contest" based on an article in the NCAA News in 1996. Patillo, a former official in the conference, said he was not aware of any such ruling.
