THOMAS
TAKES CHAIR: Dr. Dennis E. Thomas, currently director of athletics of Hampton
University, has been named chairman of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's
(NCAA) Division I-AA Football Committee. The NCAA I-AA Football Committee is responsible
for overseeing the Division I-AA football championships. Dr. Thomas, entering
his 12th year with the Pirates, also serves on the NCAA Football Issues Committee,
a Board of Directors member of the National Football Foundation and College Hall
of Fame, committee member of the Division I-AA Honors Court Committee which selects
Hall of Fame members from Division I-AA football institutions, chairman of the
Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Basketball Tournament Committee and board
member of the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame and Museum.
WHERE'S THE MONEY: Former Alabama State
head football coach Ron Dickerson is suing
the school saying payments on his five-year, $124,000 per
year contract signed in 1997 have stopped. Dickerson was
fired last year only two years into the contract after posting 5-6
and 2-9 records. The suit, claiming civil conspiracy,
wrongful discharge, and deprivation of due process, says
payments stopped May 11. Dickerson names former president
William Harris, former interim president
Roosevelt Steptoe, former athletic director
William Head and a host of other board of trustees members in the suit. Dickerson's attorney,
Donald Jackson, says the school owes his client
approximately $200,000.
