BCSP Notes . . .
- SWAC Loses Two Stars
Southern University wide receiver, Michael Hayes and Texas Southern
linebacker, Lernard Mack, both senior preseason SWAC players of the
year, were lost to their respective teams, likely for the remainder of the season,
after being injured in games on Sept. 1.
Hayes suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in the third quarter of the
Jaguars 30-21 loss to Northwestern State. The senior also suffered a small tear
of his medial meniscus. According to Southern medical officials, Hayes will have
surgery in two to three weeks when the swelling in the knee goes down.
Mack will miss the 2001 football season after undergoing surgery to repair
a broken radius suffered in TSU's season opening 17-0 victory over Prairie
View A&M. Mack, who had one sack in the game, suffered the injury during
the first quarter. He was immediately taken to Methodist hospital where a plate
was inserted into his forearm. Doctors estimate Mack to fully recover from the
injury in 8-10 weeks.
The 6-5, 215-pound Hayes caught a school record 80 passes (1st in the SWAC,
8th in the NCAA with 7.27 pg) for 1,329 yards and 15 touchdowns last season, catching
at least one TD pass in each of the Jaguars 11 games. Mack, 6-2, 220, is the reigning
SWAC Defensive Player of the Year. Last season he averaged 8.2 tackles per game,
62 of which were solos with 57.
