How They Did It
- SOUTHERN 35, Arkansas-Pine Bluff 14
Southern's defense held the vaunted UAPB running attack to just 44 yards,
341 less than a year ago in a Pine Bluff win, to cruise to their first win (1-1,
1-0 SWAC W). UAPB (1-1, 0-1 SWAC W) duo, Dwight McKissick and Ron Johnson
were held to 50 yards on 20 carries after running for 307 combined yards in
last year's game. Jaguar QB Terrance Levy (16-23) threw for 223 yards and
two TDs. Devin Lewis had his second straight 100-yard receiving game, catching
seven passes for 122 yards and a TD. He is averaging 25.9 yards per catch.
- ALCORN STATE 20, Alabama State 17
Alcorn State (1-1, 1-1 SWAC E), who was winless at 0-11 last season,
broke a 17-game losing streak with their win in Montgomery. Alcorn QB Donald
Carrie (10 of 20) passed for 192 yards, had a one-yard TD run and threw for
a third quarter score. Alabama State (0-1, 0-1 SWAC E) senior QB Darnell
Kennedy, last year's SWAC and black college passing and total offense leader,
did not dress for the game after receiving a one-game suspension from head
coach L. C. Cole . Kennedy had missed practice over the last two weeks
with academic troubles.
- HAMPTON 27, Howard 20
Rob ert Smith ran for 112 yards and two scores including the game-winner
from three yards out midway through the fourth quarter as the Pirates (1-1, 1-0
MEAC) defeated Howard (0-2, 0-1 MEAC) for the fifth straight time. Howard
WR Javonte Philpott (7 rec., 169 yds.) put up all the Bison points on three
third quarter TD receptions from QB Howard Clark covering 23, 44 and 54
yards. Hampton QB Ataveus Cash completed 18 of 36 passes for 199 yards
and a TD.
- Wingate 13, Virginia Union 12
Wingate scored on a four-yard pass play with six seconds left in the game to
knock Virginia Union (1-1, 1-0 CIAA E) from the unbeaten ranks.VUU senior
QB Jasun Thompson (20-27, 193 yards) threw two second half TD passes,the
last with 5:10 left to give the Panthers a 12-7 lead, but the Panthers were done
in by missing two two-point PAT attempts.
