Stephen Steward STEWART BACK IN THE FOLD: Former two-time Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference basketball player of the year Stephen Stewart of Coppin State is returning to the school as an assistant to his former coach, Ron "Fang" Mitchell. Since leading the Eagles to the second round of the NIT six years ago as a senior, Stewart has played professionally in Australia following stints in Holland and Spain. During his three-year career at Coppin, the Eagles won three MEAC regular-season titles, fashioned a 47-1 mark in league play and earned berths in the NCAA Tournament and the NIT. Stewart replaces Stephanie Ready, who was named assistant coach for the Greenville Groove of the National Basketball Development League.

NEW PANTHER AD: Prairie View A&M University officials have announced the hiring of Charles McClelland as their new athletics director. McClelland has served as assistant to the dean and director of development in the School of Architecture and was the assistant director of financial aid at the university. A 1993 graduate of Prairie View A&M, McClelland earned his B.A. in accounting and in 1997 he received an MBA from Prairie View and is currently in his final year pursuing a Ph.D. in higher education administration at Texas A&M University.

FISK LEGEND PASSES: Former Fisk University coach and athletic director Herbert B. "Bus" Thompson is dead at age 89. During his 28-year stint at Fisk beginning in 1950, Thompson had been head coach in football, basketball, track and golf, and athletic director. In 1937, he played a year of pro football with the New York Brown Bombers, and then went into coaching. He died of pneumonia last Wednesday at a hospital in Opelika, Ala. Survivors include his wife; son; daughter; sister; and three grandchildren. Funeral services will be Friday at Fisk Memorial Chapel.
