Game Recaps How They Did It
- TUSKEGEE 30, Winston-Salem State 23
QB Aaron James made the big plays, throwing a 81-yard TD pass in the
first quarter to Gary Curry and taking off on a 91-yard TD scamper in the
fourth, as the Golden Tigers (1-0, 0-0 SIAC) stopped WSSU (1-1, 0-0 CIAA).
James finished the day completing 14 of 24 throws for 247 yards and two
TDs. Morris Brown transfer Bobby Wilson ran for 128 yards in 24
carries including a six-yard third quarter TD run. The Golden Tigers piled up
503 yards of total offense (241 rushing, 262 passing). Meanwhile, the
Tuskegee defense held WSSU to -12 yards in 29 rushing attempts.
- BETHUNE-COOKMAN 35, Morgan State 24
Ali Culpepper ran for 229 yards and three TDs but
Morgan State (0-1, 0-1 MEAC) could pass for only 19 yards as
Bethune-Cookman (1-0, 1-0 MEAC) escaped with a win in Jacksonville. B-CC QB
Allen Suber completed 12 of 23 passes for 207 yards and two TDs but it was plays by
the Wildcat defense that preserved the victory. First, with B-CC up 21-17 and
the Bears driving in the third quarter, linebacker
Steve Baggs picked up a fumble and ran 70 yards for a score. Culpepper narrowed the gap to 28-24 with
his third TD run, this one covering 51 yards, in the first minute of the
fourth quarter. B-CC later stopped MSU on fourth down at the B-CC 10 with
ten minutes to play. Suber finished the scoring hooking up for the second
time with Shaun Ford (4 rec., 104 yds.) from 64 yards out.
- JACKSON STATE 27, Howard 17
Sophomore QB Robert Kent threw for 262 yards and three TDs, two of
them to former QB T. C. Taylor, as Jackson State
(1-0, 0-0 SWAC E) won the Chicago Classic, renamed the
Walter Payton Classic, over Howard (0-1,
0-0 MEAC). Taylor, who won the MVP award in this game last year as a
QB, added the same award this year as a wide receiver hauling in six passes
for 120 yards including 35 and 29-yard scoring tosses in the third
quarter. Howard trailed 27-3 in the fourth quarter before reserve QB
Travis Coleman came in and hit Javonte Philpott
with two scoring passes (17 and 9 yards).
- TENNESSEE STATE 27, Alabama A&M 6
The vaunted Alabama A&M (0-1, 0-0 SWAC E) defense held
Tennessee State (1-0, 0-0 OVC) down for nearly three quarters before injuries
and fatigue got to them allowing to Tigers to pull away to victory. TSU
QB Shannon Harris completed 21 of 39 passes for 291 yards and four TDs,
all in the second half. Four A&M defensive starters were hurt in the game.
- GRAMBLING STATE 37, Alcorn State 22
BCSP #1 Grambling (1-0, 1-0 SWAC W) gave up 324 passing yards
to Alcorn State (0-1, 0-1 SWAC W) but held their running game to just
35 yards in 26 carries to get a win in their opener.
D. Currie hit on only 17 of 40 passes but had TD throws of 19, 77 and 41 yards, the latter that pulled
the Braves to within 30-22 in the fourth quarter.
Brad Hill (22 carries, 111 y ards) put the game away for Grambling with a 52-yard fourth quarter TD,
his second of the day. GSU starting QB Randy Hymes
was pulled in the second half after completing 10 of 23 passes for 122 yards and a TD.
- FLORIDA A&M 35, Delaware State

FAMU QB Quinn Gray hit on 22 of 33 passes for 290 yards and three
TDs as the Rattlers (1-0, 1-0 MEAC) downed the Hornets (0-1, 0-1 MEAC).
Gray hit Marco Junious on a 74-yard TD and then had a 16-yard run to paydirt
in the fourth quarter after DSU had closed to within 21-17.
