UNDER THE BANNER What's Going On In and Around Black College Sports
BOUND FOR HAWAII: Two Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference
all-stars and a respected conference coach have received invitations to
the 2002 Hula Bowl on Feb. 2, in Maui, Hawaii. North Carolina A&T
running back Maurice Hicks and Hampton
defensive end Greg Scott will play in the postseason showcase
for college seniors while Hampton head coach Joe
Taylor, the AFCA's current president, will serve as an
assistant for one of the teams. Hicks, a six-foot, 200-pounder from Emporia,
Va., is the MEAC's 2001 preseason offensive player of the
year. He rushed for 1,487 yards and 15 TDs last year to earn
first team all-conference honors. He broke the MEAC single-game
rushing record on two occasions last season getting 259 yards against
Hampton and coming back to pile up 353 (and six TDs) in the Aggies'
season-ending win over South Carolina State.
Scott, a 6-5, 260 senior from Courtland, Va., was also named first team
all-MEAC after finishing the 2000 season with 50 tackles, 13 for losses of 98
yards and 6.5 sacks. Both Scott and Hicks were named first
team black college all-Americans by both Street &
Smith's magazine and Black Voices Quarterly. The postseason
all-star game, sponsored by the American Football
Coaches Association (AFCA), will feature Bob Stoops, head coach
of national champion Oklahoma, as coach of the South
squad where both Hicks and Scott are expected to play.
Taylor will be one of the Stoops' assistants along with Steve Spurrier
of Florida.
WOODS AT JC SMITH: Earl Woods, father of Tiger Woods, will be the guest speaker Friday (Aug. 31) at the Johnson C. Smith University Hall of Fame banquet in Charlotte, N.C. Woods, who taught his famous son the game of golf at a very young age and chronicled his teaching and nurturing methods in the best-selling book, "Training A Tiger," was persuaded to appear at the event by Cary Mitchell, a Charlotte-based clothing designer and JCSU graduate who makes Tiger's pants for Nike. Woods will appear at a 6:30 p.m. reception before the 7:30 p.m. banquet. The Golden Bulls will induct early '70s basketball star Robert Lewis, Harris Jones a grid star in the late '60s and Billy Corbett, who was an all-conference lineman in football in the late '60s and early '70s. © 2001 Azeez Communications, Inc.
