Fort Valley State 33,
Morehouse 27, 2 OTs
Fullback Duron Croson bulled over from one-yard out in the
second overtime to give Fort Valley State (1-0, 1-0 SIAC) a come-from-behind
win over Morehouse (0-1, 0-1 SIAC) in a key SIAC opener in Griffin, Ga.
The overtime was set up when FVSU tailback Orlando Wiley
went 84 yards with a flat pass to tie the game at 27 with a little over five minutes to play
in regulation. Both teams missed field goals in the first overtime
before Morehouse QB Chivalrik Daughtry (15-25, 225 yards, 2 TDs) was hit
and fumbled through the end zone on the Maroon Tigers' first possession of
the second extra period giving the ball back to the Wildcats at the 25.
FVSU needed just five rushes to cover the distance. Wiley rushed for 142 yards
and two first quarter TDs while linebacker Willie Batts
had ten tackes, a key fourth quarter sack of Daughtry for -17 yards and the hit on Daughtry
that caused the fumble in the second OT. WR Kenneth Rogers
(5 rec., 225 yds.) caught both Daughtry scoring tosses of 28 and 39 yards.
WINSTON-SALEM STATE 27, Carson Newman 16
After trailing nationally fifth-ranked Carson-Newan 16-15 at the
half, WSSU (1-0, 0-0 CIAA) shut the Eagles out in the second half and then
scored 12 points in the last two-and-a-half minutes of the game to pull out the
win inWinston-Salem. The Rams mounted a 12-play, 65-yard fourth
quarter drive that consumed over six minutes and ended with a 32-yard
Ashley Oakton field goal to go up 18-16. CNC fumbled the ensuing kickoff
which the Rams recovered and converted into another Oakton FG (36
yards). Robert Pitts put the finishing touches on the big win as he picked off
an errant Jaaren Nesbitt pass and returned it 18 yards for the final
margin.WSSU's first score came on safety Stephen Kelly's
12-yard fumble return. The Rams got seven turnovers on the day. RB
Damone Washington led the Ram offfense piling up 100 yards on 25 carries and scoring their only TD.
