UNDER THE BANNER What's Going On In and Around Black College Sports
 SPECIAL SECTION: The 2001 Street & Smith's College Football
magazine hit newsstands last week with a special section
previewing black college football. The 19-page section takes the place of
the company's Black College Football magazine which had
been published the last three years. The section includes a national
preview, special sidebar stories about players and coaches to watch
in 2001, a preseason top 20, a preseason all-American team
and previews on teams in all four black college conferences and the
independents. Defending Southwestern Athletic
Conference champion Grambling State is picked as the
preseason number one team while writers picked the Tigers to also
take the SWAC West title with Alabama State
taking the East. Tuskegee is the pick of the
Southern Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference. Winston-Salem State and Virginia
Union in the West and East of the Central Intercollegiate
Athletic Association and Florida A&M
of the Mid Eastern Athletic Conference are the other conference favorites. The
all-Americans are led on offense by Alabama State
QB Darnell Kennedy, Southern WR
Michael Hayes and Kentucky State
RB Alvon Brown. On the defensive side,
Tuskegee LB Kelvin Powell and Texas Southern
LB Lernard Mack are the anchors.
