BCSP Notes . . .
- The top two black college basketball prospects didn't make it in the NBA draft but at
least one is expected to get a shot as a free agent in the league.
Hampton center Tarvis Williams' agent, Ron Delpit, says four teams are interested in bringing the 6-8 shotblocker in for
a tryout. If he doesn't catch on with an NBA team, Delpit says he has a six-figure deal
already in hand for Williams to play in Italy. Mississippi Valley State
guard DeWayne Jefferson, who was third in the nation in scoring this year at 23.6 points per game, has contract
offers to play overseas, says his agent, Marcus Wallace of Wallace Group in Jackson, Ms. "I
don't have a problem with going overseas," said Jefferson. "Maybe the timing will be right one
day and things will work out where I can play in the NBA."
- First-time nominee and selectee Jackie
Slater, who attended Jackson State, will
be among of six former players and a coach to be enshrined in the Football Hall of Fame
in Canton, Ohio, in ceremonies on Aug. 4. Slater was one of three offensive linemen
selected along with fellow tackle Ron Yary and guard Mike Munchak. The others are wide
receiver Lynn Swann, defensive lineman Jack Youngblood, linebacker Nick Buoniconti and
former Buffalo coach Marv Levy. Slater played in 20 seasons with the Rams from 1976-95 and
was named to the Pro Bowl seven times. His 259 games played were the most by an
offensive lineman at the time of his retirement. Known as a powerful drive blocker, Slater paved
the way for Hall of Famer Eric Dickerson to set a rookie rushing record with 1,808 yards in
1983. Slater currently works for Fox Sports as a football analyst.
