  • McNair Maybe Ready to Re-Sign with Titans
With his seven-year contract set to expire at the end of this season, former Alcorn State and Southwestern Athletic Conference record-setting quarterback Steve McNair appears poised to sign up for another six years with the NFL's Tennessee Titans.

McNair reportedly has a six-year deal on the table that could allow him to almost finish his career with the Titans, the team that drafted him in the first round (third overall pick) in the 1995 draft.

His agent, James "Bus" Cook, was expected to meet with McNair this week about the contract just as the contract was going to Titans' owner Bud Adams for his approval.

McNair, who led the Titans to the Super Bowl in the 1999-2000 season, is coming off a year where he set a career high for completion percentage (62.6%) and set a new high in touchdown passes with 15. He rushed for 403 yards last season after leading all quarterbacks in rushing yards during the 1997 (674 yards) and 1998 (559 yards) seasons. McNair became the Titans' starter in 1997 and started all 16 games.

McNair's contract is expected to have povisions that nearly match Titans' running back Eddie George's deal of last season that paid George a $14 million signing bonus.

  • NC A&T Makes Coaching Change in Women's Track
It was announced Tuesday that North Carolina A&T head women's track coach Tonya McKelvey-White has resigned from her position effective July 1.

White had been the head women's coach for the past three seasons and will continue to work within the program in a volunteer capacity as she plans to pursue her professional career as an athlete. Head men's track coach Roy "Spaceman" Thompson will assume the head coaching duties in a new position as director of track and field operations.

"We are sorry to see (McKelvey -White) leave but we are excited to have Coach Thompson fill the positions and know he can bring his recent success with the men on the national level with him to the women's program."

Thompson just completed one of the most successful men's season on the national level as his 4x100 meter relay team set school records en route to a fifth place finish at the NCAA Div. I championships.

McKelvey-White is a 1994 graduate of Clemson University. During her collegiate career she was a three-time NCAA All-American in the long jump, two-time ACC champion in the 4x100 meter relay, ACC runner-up in the long jump and ACC champion in the long jump. She also competed for a spot on the 1996 OIympic team.

  • Street & Smith's Black College Football Mag No More
The Street & Smith's Black College Football magazine will not be published this year.

The company decided earlier this year not to continue publication of the near 100-page magazine that debuted in 1998. Officials of the company said the magazine did sell well enough to continue publishing the stand-alone edition.

This year, Street & Smith's has included a 19-page special section on black college football in its regular college football edition which is due out on newsstands on July 2.

  • Pirates best in Virginia
The Hampton University Pirates won 62 per cent of their intercollegiate athletic contests in 2000-2001, posting a mark of 133-81, to win the 23rd annual Virginia Sports Information Directors Association Div. I All-Sport survey for the second straight year.

The survey began in 1978-79 and includes winning percentages of those sports with NCAA sanctioned championships. The Pirates edged out the University of Virginia, which finished with a winning percentage of .611.

On the men's side, Hampton won 75 per cent of its contests (51-17) including Mid Eastern Athletic Conference championships and NCAA appearances in both men's basketball, which led the state with 25 victories, and men's tennis whose 19 wins also were tops in Virginia.

Led by a 13-5 women's tennis team, the Lady Pirates placed fourth amongst Virginia Div. I women's programs with a winning percentage of .562 (82-64). Hampton captured the MEAC Indoor Track and Field championship and the Northern Division title in softball.
