UNDER THE BANNER What's Going On In and Around Black College Sports
CHANEY TO HALL OF FAME: Temple University head basketball coach
John Chaney, a Bethune-Cookman graduate
and former Cheyney State University coach, who has led the
Owls to 17 NCAA tournament appearances in 19 seasons, joins
former Philadelphia 76ers center Moses Malone and Duke coach
Mike Krzyzewski as part of one of the smallest Basketball Hall of
Fame groups in years. The 69-year-old Chaney has compiled a
431-179 record at Temple and has led the Owls to six Atlantic 10
Conference titles and to the regional semifinals of the NCAA
tournament five times, including last season. Chaney has been
selected Atlantic 10 coach of the year five times and national coach
of the year twice with the Owls. Last season may have
been Chaney's best. His team overcame the loss of two players
both were kicked off the squad and a seven-game
losing streak for the first time in Chaney's tenure to reach the
South regional finals. A 69-62 loss to top-seeded Michigan
State prevented Chaney from making his first Final Four
appearance. Before joining Temple, Chaney was head coach
at Cheyney, where he had a record of 225-59 in 10
seasons. Chaney led Cheyney State to the 1978 NCAA Division
II national championship and was named Division II
national coach of the year twice.
PROGRAM REVIEW: The Tennessee Board of Regents will conduct a review of the Tennessee State athletic department following a request from black state legislators concerned with the recent firing of Dr. James Smith as athletic director. Smith, who served only 21 months on the job, was the third athletic director during the ten-year tenure of TSU President, Dr. James Hefner and the second one not to make it through two years. Hefner fired Vivian Fuller in 1999 after only 17 months on the job. Fuller sued and settled out of court. Reps. Ulysses Jones, Jr., Barbara Cooper and Joe Towns had requested the Board, the Tennessee Higher Education Commission and the Tennessee State Comptroller to conduct a probe. Jones and Cooper are TSU graduates. They cited the firings, NCAA violations, policies related to hiring and firing of coaches and the likelihood that Smith's firing could result in another suit as reasons for the probe. © 2001 Azeez Communications, Inc.
