BCSP Notes . . .

  • B-CC Three-Peats
    Bethune-Cookman, using the long ball at the most opportune times, downed Norfolk State 11-2 in the final game to earn their third consecutive Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference baseball title Sunday. The Wildcats (26-32) now advance to the NCAA tournament May 25-27 at a site to be determined.

    George Bailey, Treran Porter, and James Carter each had homers as the Wildcats pulled away from a 3-2 deficit with three runs in the sixth and five in the seventh.

    Travis Johnson picked up the victory, scattering four hits and striking out six. B-CC players picked to the all-tournament team include Jose Ramos, George Bailey, Micah Simmons, and Sharbel Torres. B-CC head coach Mervyl Melendez was named most outstanding coach.

  • JSU Golfers Struggle
    The young history-making Jackson State women's golf team had rough going in their first NCAA Regional.

    The Lady Tigers, the first HBCU women's golf team to make the NCAA field, finished last in the 21-team Eastern Regional tourney held in Chapel Hill, N. C., with a score of 351, 63-over par. Freshman Akita Taylor posted the best individual score, tying for 88th with an 81.

  • Grambling Out
    Western Illinois belted nine home runs in a doubleheader sweep of Southwestern Athletic Conference champion Grambling State, 8-0 and 17-1, in an NCAA softball play-in series at WIU's Mary Ellen McKee Stadium. Grambling State, which won five straight games in the SWAC Tournament last weekend to earn the conference's postseason title, closed the season with a record of 33-18.

  • Beth.-Cookman Plays-In
    LaTasha Robertson went 2 for 3 with one RBI to lead Bethune-Cookman College to a 2-0 victory over host Tennessee Tech to win the NCAA play-in softball series and advance to the NCAA tournament May 17 at a site to be determined.

    The Wildcats, Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference champions, put together a six-hit performance to defeat the Ohio Valley Conference champions in the best of three series. B-CC split with Tennessee Tech, 4-2 and 0-9, Thursday to force Friday's decisive game.

    This is the second-straight year Bethune-Cookman (45-21) has advanced to the NCAA tournament through the play-in. Earning the win on Friday was MEAC Rookie-of-the-Year Jessica Cabato, who also led the Wildcats to victory last Sunday in the MEAC championship game.

  • Alcorn State Shutout
    The University of Texas women's tennis team easily downed Alcorn State at the 2001 NCAA Women's Tennis Regional Championships on Saturday at Penick-Allison Tennis Center in Austin. Texas gave up only one game during the entire match to Alcorn State and won 4-0. Senior Janet Walker (Seffner, Fla./Canterbury) posted her second consecutive shutout victory at the No. 2 position, defeating Sandra Keaveney (6-0, 6-0) to seal the overall match for UT. Freshman Michelle Krinke (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) tabbed the first singles win of the day for the Longhorns, downing Theresa Kennedy (6-0, 6-0), followed by junior Kaysie Smashey (El Paso, Texas/Franklin) defeating Dana Childs (6-0, 6-0) at No. 5.

  • Hampton Tennis Ousted
    The fifth-seeded Duke men's tennis team blanked Hampton, 4-0, in the first round of the 2001 NCAA Men's Tennis Tournament at the Duke Tennis Stadium in Durham, N.C.

    Duke quickly took the 1-0 lead as they took the doubles point with victories at the number one and three positions. The 22nd-ranked team of Phillip King and Ramsey Smith ousted Pyung Koo Lee/Tomas Ibler 8-1 at the number one slot while Yorke Allen and Mike Yani defeated Shaun Crichlow/Ladislav Rezac at the number three slot 8-5.

    Alex Bose got things started for Duke at No. 5 singles as he ousted Iber 6-0, 6-0 in a match that only lasted 40 minutes. Duke continued to dominate Hampton (19-6) at the bottom of the lineup as Allen cruised by Amine Elouizzai 6-3, 6-1. Forty-ninth-ranked Andres Pedroso clinched the match for the Blue Devils as he posted a 6-2,6-3 victory over Glauco Nascimento at No. 3 singles.
