Tim O'NealBEST FINISH: Former Jackson State golfer Tim O'Neal fired a final round three-over par 74 to finish at seven-under 277 in a tie for sixth with three others at the BUY.COM Carolinas Classic in Raleigh, N. C. over the weekend. The excellent outing game O'Neal his largest paycheck thus far in his professional career as he pocketed $14,568. The payday raised his winnings through six 2001 BUY.COM events to $28,569, 29th best on the money list. O'Neal went into Sunday's final round in fourth place after improving his score in each of the tourney's first three days. He opened Thursday with a one-under par 70, came back to shoot a three-under 68 on Friday and then blistered the course with a six-under 65 on Saturday to get into contention. Saturday's round included six birdies and no bogeys. But on Sunday, O'Neal could not get it going as four bogeys on the front nine and two on the back nine more than offset his three birdies on the day and doomed his chances of winning. Prior to Sunday's round, O'Neal had just three bogeys in the tournament.

RETURN TO GRIDIRON: Allen University was to formally announce Tuesday that it will reactivate its football team starting this fall when the Tigers will begin a club program. The program was discontinued after the 1968 season and has been dormant since. Tuesday's announcement was to take place in front of the John Hurst Adams Gymnotorium on campus beginning at 1 p.m. Allen will play a club football program for two or perhaps three years before upgrading to intercollegiate status. The Tigers will play four games the first year, including a game against Edward Waters College of Jacksonville, Fla., which also is beginning a club football program. No game dates have been firmed up, but the 2001 schedule should be released in the near future. The reactivation of the program eventually could lead to a resumption of the series against across-the-street rival Benedict, which revived its program in 1995 after a 29-year hiatus. Willie Simon, who served as head coach of the last Allen team, is currently offensive coordinator at Benedict.
