Brenda Edmond

GROUND BREAKING: Clark Atlanta University (CAU) has appointed Brenda L. Edmond as the new director of athletics. Ms. Edmond is the former Assistant Director of Athletics at Southern University and now becomes the first female athletics director in the history of Clark Atlanta. Edmond is a 1974 health and physical education graduate of Southern and in 1976 received the masters degree in school and public education from the University of Michigan. In addition to serving as the Assistant Director of Athletics at Southern University since 1997, Edmond also served on an interim basis as the school's Director of Athletics from 1999 to 2000. Edmond will begin her duties as the university's first female athletics director on June 4, 2001. She replaces CAU Lady Panther Basketball Coach Angelyne Brown who served as the interim director during the extensive national search for a permanent director of athletics conducted by a diverse group of CAU faculty, staff and students.

ON HOLD: Florida A&M athletic director Ken Riley said last week that the school will not hire new men's and women's basketball coaches until a successor is named for outgoing president Dr. Frederick Humphries. According to a Tallahassee Democrat story, Riley said the school's search committee had completed their work and had recommendations for both positions that were ready to be approved by Humphries but the Board of Regents stepped in to give the final decision to the incoming president. Humphries is stepping down in June. Tallahassee Community College head coach Mike Gillespie was thought to be the front-runner for the men's job from among six candidates that were interviewed. Among the six was Mississippi assistant Eric Bozeman and Benjamin Betts, a former South Carolina State assistant now an assistant at College of Charleston. Winston-Salem State head women's coach Debra Clark and Johnson C. Smith women's coach Barry Street are among those interviewed for the women's position.
