What's Going On In and Around Black College Sports

IN LINE: Former Hampton University and NBA hoops star Rick Mahorn, now an assistant coach with the NBA's Atlanta Hawks, has been mentioned as a possible replacement for George Irvine who was fired last week as head coach for the NBA's Detroit Pistons. Mahorn, a 16-year NBA veteran who played for the Pistons from 1985 to 1989 and was a member of the '89 Pistons championship squad, reportedly has his name in the hat along with former teammate Bill Laimbeer and current Denver assistant John Lucas. Detroit GM Joe Dumars, who was a teammate of Mahorn, says he intends to talk to both Mahorn and Laimbeer about the job. Mahorn, who was on hand for this past weekend's Black College All-Star Classic in Baltimore serving as a coach of the women's South team, made it clear at Friday's press conference that one of his goals is to be an NBA head coach. Before joining head coach Lon Kruger's staff in Atlanta, Mahorn served one season as head coach of the CBA's Rockford Lightning. The 6-8 Mahorn was a second round pick of the Washington Bullets in the 1980 NBA Draft after finishing his career as Hampton's all time leading scorer (2,418 points) and second-leading rebounder.

STRIKING!: The North Carolina A&T women's bowling team finish 12th in the 16-team field at the Intercollegiate Bowling Championships this past weekend in Grand Rapids, Michigan. A&T lost to Erie (N.Y.) College 4-2 but came back to knock off Florida State, 4-3. In their final match of the double-elimination tournament, the Lady Aggies fell to Central Missouri State, 4-1. The team was led by coach Adam Chastain and captain Crystal Bailey. A&T was the first historically black college or university to compete in what amounts to the national championship of bowling. The Lady Aggies finished fourth in the East Region to gain a berth to the national championships.
