North sweeps all-star tilts

Baltimore - The men's and women's North All-Stars were too much for their South counterparts as they rolled to victories Saturday in the 6th Annual National Car Rental Black College All-Star Basketball Classic at Morgan State's Hill Field House.

Both the North men and women, made up of senior stars from the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (CIAA) and the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), built double-digit halftime leads and cruised to victories over the North's Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) and independent all-stars before a crowd estimated at just under 3,000 fans.

The North women had a distinct height advantage as 6-5 Julie Tarrance of Livingstone, 6-3 Malveata Johnson of N. C. A&T and 6-2 Sharon Palmer of Johnson C. Smith, towered over the smaller South women leading to a gaping 72-48 rebounding advantage. The South led 39-27 at the half before finishing off a 84-61 victory.

Delaware State forward Chavonne Stewart scored 10 second half points and finished with a game-high 16 to garner women's MVP honors. Alcorn State's SWAC MVP Cherea Wood was the only South player to reach double-figures with 10 points.

In the men's game, Coppin State's all-MEAC forward Joe Brown had eight points in each half to lead all scorers with 16 and cop the MVP award in a 98-77 North victory. His first eight helped the North jump out to a 45-35 halftime lead. Brown led four North players in double figures.

Tennessee State guard Jamie Roberts, Miles forward Dwayne Marable and Southern sharp-shooter Courtney Henderson all had 14 points to lead the South who canned only 29.3% (24 of 82) of their shots from the field.

Former NBA stars Ralph Sampson (North) and Darryl Dawkins (South) coached the men's teams while retired WNBA player Kym Hampton (North) and former Hampton and NBA star Rick Mahorn (South) handled the women.
