UNDER THE BANNER
What's Going On In
and Around Black College Sports
YOUNGER REPEAT: Record-breaking Florida A&M
senior wide receiver Jacquay Nunnally added the 2001
Paul "Tank" Younger Trophy, given to the nation's
best black college football player, to his collection of honors in
ceremonies Sunday evening at the Los Angeles Radisson Hotel. Nunnally, who
led all black college receivers in receptions per game this year (95, 8.6
per game) and capped his career by setting a new collegiate reception
mark (317) breaking black college legend and NFL great
Jerry Rice's record (301), won the Street &
Smith's magazine player of the year honor, the Eddie
Robinson Award earlier this year and also won the Younger Trophy
in 1999 as a sophomore. Tuskegee head coach
Rick Comegy, who led the Golden Tigers to a perfect 12-0 season and
the black college national championship, was on hand to pick
up the coach of the year award. Voting for the Spirit Awards
and the Younger Trophy, sponsored by the Rutherford Group,
is done by black college coaches, sports information
directors and selected media.
MILES GONE: Miles College dipped in to
the high school ranks to pluck one of their own to head its
football program when they named Wade
Streeter last week to the position. Streeter returns to his alma mater after
leading Aliceville High School to the Class 3A state
championship. Streeter, 35, who had been an assistant coach at Miles
from 1994-96, replaces Cecil Leonard who was fired at the end
of last season.
DRAFTABLES: The list of black college
players making it to Indianapolis this past weekend for the
NFL Scouting Combine was relatively small. Tops on the list
of players that performed before a horde of NFL scouts,
coaches and front office personnel was South Carolina State
tight end Arthur Love who is rated among the top ten players
at his position. Alabama State offensive tackle
Kendrick Rogers, who
played in three postseason all-star games, was also among the invitees.
Here are the others. Hilton Alexander, WR, Morris Brown Scotty
Anderson, WR, Grambling State Daniel Guy, WR, Jackson State
LaShawn Mack, C, Norfolk State Kenny Bryant, CB, Jackson State
Legarius Jennings, CB, Tennessee State Carey Scott, CB, Kentucky
State
