UNDER THE BANNER What's Going On In and Around Black College Sports ELLINGTON TAKES REINS: Morris Brown College has named the school's head men's basketball coach and former Harlem Globetrotter, Russell Ellington, as its athletic director. Ellington served on an interim basis for two weeks before being selected to hold the permanent position. "It's a big challenge," Ellington said. "There are a lot of issues we have to visit immediately. I've been busy trying to see what strategies we're going to use to attack them." Ellington also has been busy with his coaching responsibilities, but says he's up to that challenge as well. "We only have four more games in the season, so that can be easily handled. The longer trips I'll have to miss, but it's in capable hands with my assistant coaches," Ellington said. His team, for the first time, is playing a rigorous NCAA Division I schedule. Ellington graduated from Morris Brown in 1960, receiving a degree in biology and was a member of the basketball, football, baseball and track teams. He landed a spot on the Harlem Globetrotters in 1961 and traveled with the team until 1965. Before returning to his alma mater in 1997, Ellington served as athletic director and basketball coach at Savannah Technical Institute (STI) from 1993-1997. Prior to his STI career, Ellington coached the Harlem Globetrotters from 1985-1993, before serving as the athletic director for Savannah State University from 1976-1985.
