HOW THEY DID ITDouble overtime games that had major impacts on conference races highlighted black college games over the weekend. CIAA (men) SHAW 110, Bowie State 101, 2OT It was tournament quality basketball in one of the CIAA's smallest venues as just over 1,200 people watched Saturday as Eastern Division leader Shaw (5-2 CIAA E, 16-7) downed third-place Bowie State at Shaw's Spaulding Gymnasium in a double-overtime thriller. The nip-and-tuck affair came down to a three-pointer by Bowie's Randy Gill with two seconds left that sent the game into the first overtime. Both teams scored 10 points in the first extra period before Shaw's inside game took over in the second. Point guard Jermaine Smith led Shaw with 28 points while CIAA leading scorer Ronald Murray added 27. Gill led the Bulldogs (3-4 CIAA E, 16-7) with 24 points and 10 rebounds while center Tim Washington added 20 points. SWAC (men) ALABAMA STATE 71, Alabama A&M 63, 2OT The Alabama State men fought back from a 11-point first half deficit and needed two overtimes Saturday to subdue Alabama A&M and claim sole possession of first place in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. The two teams, who came in tied for the top spot with 9-2 conference records, were alternately dominant in the two halves. ASU shot only 26.9% (7 of 26) to fall behind in the first half and then held A&M to an equally woeful 25% (11 of 44) to catch them at the end of regulation. Both teams scored four points in the first overtime but ASU outscored the Bulldogs 15-7 in the second extra period to pull out the win. A&M backcourt star Steve Ward struggled shooting a combine 0 of 11 in the game and finishing with just three points. Backcourt mate Desmond Cambridge led the Bulldogs (9-3 SWAC, 13-9) with 25 points. Dwaynius Harris was the only other Bulldog in double figures with 14. The ASU Hornets (10-2 SWAC, 14-7) placed four players in double figure scoring paced by Alvin Pettway's 19. MEAC (women) DELAWARE STATE 83, Howard 81 Ed Davis' Lady Hornets of Delaware State (8-6 MEAC, 10-13) pulled the upset special of the week Monday when they knocked off the MEAC-leading Lady Bison of Howard (11-2 MEAC, 14-7) in Dover. DSU constantaly beat the Howard press down court converting 28 fast break points to only two for the Lady Bison. The Lady Hornets also dominated in the paint, normally the exclusive domain of Howard center Andrea Gardner. They limited Gardner, the nation's leading rebounder (15.6 rpg.), to only eight boards while the smaller Hornets outscored Howard 58-26 in the paint. Davis, who led Bowie State to three straight CIAA ('97, '98, '99) before departing last year for DSU, was led by forward Chavonne Stewart's 29 points on 13 of 18 shooting and 10 assists. The Lady Hornets did not attempt a three-pointer in the game and shot a blistering 73% (19 of 26) from the field in the second half. Howard got 23 points from freshman guard Essence Coggins and 17 from Gardner. © 2001 Azeez Communications, Inc. |
