Postseason Hoops Notes
St. Aug's, W. Va. State get to semis of D2 regionals CIAA Men's Regular Season and Tournament champ St. Augustine's and WVIAC Men's Tournament champ West Virginia State were the only two black college teams to get wins last week in the NCAA Div. II Regional basketball playoffs. Four women's teams went down to defeat in Friday's regional quarterfinals and three men's teams suffered regional quarterfinal losses Saturday. St. Aug's, playing in the Atlantic sub-Regional in Wheeling, W. Va,. got by Kutztown 70-54 Saturday in the quarterfinals before falling to West Liberty 90-83 in Sunday's regional semifinal. St. Aug's got 18 points and 9 rebounds from all-CIAA forward Hayward Fain and 12 points from fellow all-CIAA guard Chris Jordan in the quarterfinal win. Fain added 17 points and 16 rebounds to Jordan's team- and season-high 34 points in the semifinal loss. Jordan canned six of 13 3-pointers. Head coach Lonnie Blow, Jr's Falcons, who had six seniors, end the season with a sparkling 27-5 record, setting a modern school record for victories. W. Va. State, playing in the other Atlantic sub-Regional in Indiana, Pa., got a 89-79 quarterfinal win Saturday over East Stroudsburg but fell Sunday to host Indiana (PA), 91-76. Senior guard Jason Emerson canned 9 of 17 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 31 points in WVSU's quarterfinal win. Three other Yellow Jackets scored in double figures. Fellow senior guard Darren Jones came thru with a career-high 40 points but it was not enough in the semifinal loss. Bryan Poore's Yellow Jackets finished their season at 29-4. The closest any of the quarterfinal losers came was Fort Valley State's 50-49 loss to Valdosta State in the women's South Region. The 3rd-seeded Lady Wildcats fell on a shot with 6.7 seconds to go.
