Ranked Div. II basketball teams as stretch drive begins

Headed into February, the last month of the basketball regular season for NCAA Div. II conferences, eight black college teams are ranked regionally. They will be jockeying for positioning down the stretch looking for one of the eight seeds to regional tournaments that will be handed out after their conference tournaments.

On the women's side, four CIAA teams and two SIAC are in the rankings that came out on January 27.

From the CIAA in the Atlantic Region, Virginia State (13-4, 9-3) was third, Bowie State (11-4, 11-2) was fifth, Shaw (12-6, 7-5) was eighth and Johnson C. Smith (14-5, 7-5) was tenth. VSU was 1-1 this week and may move down in the ranking while BSU was 2-0 and may move up.

From the SIAC and the South Region, Fort Valley State (19-1, 14-1) was third while Benedict (14-6, 11-4) was seventh. FVSU just completed a 4-0 week and could possible move up in the next ranking. Benedict was 4-1 on the week and will likely retain its place.

For the men, one CIAA team, two from the SIAC and West Virginia State of the WVIAC were in the rankings.

St. Augustine's (14-3, 8-2) still has the best record in the CIAA and just completed a 3-0 week that should move it up from its eighth ranking in the Atlantic Region. WVSU (15-2) was 2-0 for the week and should keep or improve its third ranking in the same region.

Clark Atlanta (15-2, 13-2), suffered a close loss to backyard rival Morehouse this week and may fall from its No. 2 ranking in the South Region. Tuskegee (10-7, 9-5) may fall out of the rankings altogether after suffering three straight losses. The Golden Tigers were ranked seventh.
