What's Going On In and Around Black College Sports
Clark Atlanta University has named
Daryl C. McNeill, Sr. as its head football
coach. The announcement was made by Dr. Carlton E.
Brown, President, and Dr. Tamica Jones, Director of Athletics .
"I am excited about working with Dr. Brown and Dr. Jones and
feel that my vision is consistent with that of the University and
the direction they want to take the football program," said
McNeill. "I'm elated to get here, get started and meet my players, as well
as faculty and staff."
McNeill, who has more than 20 years coaching
experience, most recently served as running backs coach at
Saint Augustine's (2009) and as the Associate Director of
Athletics for External Operations and Head Football Coach
at Johnson C. Smith (2004-08). The position at Johnson
C. Smith was the second time he coached at the university;
the first stint was also as Head Football Coach (1995-97).
McNeill is no stranger to success. In 1996, McNeill
led the Golden Bulls to a record of 7-3, the program's
first winning season in 15 years, and was honored as the
Black College Sports Co-Coach of the Year. In 2006, he led
JCSU to a 7-4 record and an appearance in the Pioneer
Bowl. He also served two years as associate head coach at
North Carolina A&T (2003- 04).
Prior to his tenure at A&T, McNeill spent a eight
years at South Carolina State. His first position was as
Graduate Assistant and Administrative Assistant (1983-85). He
then became the Assistant Football Coach (1985-86) and
returned as the Assistant Football Coach and Offensive
Coordinator (1999-03). McNeill also spent two years as
Assistant Head Football Coach and Offensive Coordinator at
Tennessee State (1993-95) and had two stints at
Savannah State, serving as the Assistant Head Football Coach (1988-93)
and then as the Head Football Coach (1997-99).
Over a coaching career that exceeds 20 years,
McNeill has amassed a record of 27-36.
McNeill is a graduate of South Carolina State where
he received both a bachelor of science in business
administration and a master of education in business.
The Mississippi Valley State Department of
Athletics announced Monday that University of North Alabama
defensive coordinator Karl Morgan has been named the school's
new head football coach. Morgan takes over the program
from Willie Totten, who spent eight seasons at the helm and
stepped down November 30.
"After an open search with candidates from across the
nation, we are pleased to have Karl Morgan as the newest
football coach at Mississippi Valley State" said interim director of athletics
Donald R. Sims. "We now hope that Morgan can take the reins of the
program and guide the Devils into this new decade."
A veteran of both high school and collegiate
coaching, Morgan has spent the previous five seasons as the
defensive coordinator at the University of North Alabama.
Morgan has 21 years of coaching experience including stints
as defensive line coach at Nicholls State,
Southern, Purdue and Arkansas State. He has also served as defensive
coordinator at Alcorn State,
Hampton and the University of North Alabama.
At UNA, the team has amassed an 84-26 record and
a NCAA Division II quarterfinalist in 2006, 2007 and 2009
in addition to being a NCAA Division II semifinalist in
2005 and 2008. He is a former defensive lineman with the
NFL Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1984-86) and the
Saskatchewan Roughriders (1983) of the Canadian Football League.
