Massie resigns at Livingstone
Livingstone College has accepted the request of head football coach Lamonte Massie, to be reassigned to other duties for the remainder of this year.

In a meeting Monday, Coach Massie made the decision not to coach football team for the remainder of the season. Massie will continue to work at Livingstone College in a capacity in which he can continue his contributions to the operation and mission of the Holistic College.

"Coach Massie possesses the qualities that fit with the Holistic College concept and that is why his services are of value to Livingstone College," said Dr. Jimmy R. Jenkins, Sr., President of Livingstone College.

Assistant Head Football Coach Eric Brown will serve as Interim Head Coach for the remainder of the season. A national search will be conducted at the conclusion for the 2009 football season. At that time Coach Brown will be eligible to apply for the Head Coaching vacancy if he is interested.

Livingstone College accepted the request of Coach Massie so that the football team can continue its quest to reaching its potential. Livingstone College plays host to Lincoln University on Saturday, September 26, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. in Salisbury, North Carolina.

FAMU kick returner Vann to be featured on ESPN College Game Day Saturday
The hits just keep on coming for Florida A&M All-America kick returner LeRoy Vann, who will be the subject of a feature segment on this Saturday's ESPN COLLEGE GAME DAY, Built By Home Depot, which airs at 10 a.m. Eastern Time on ESPN.

Vann will be interviewed by former Michigan Heisman Trophy winner, NFL All-Pro and GAME DAY panelist Desmond Howard on campus Tuesday as part of the production for the segment.

Vann's two TD returns in last week's game against Howard tied an NCAA Division I FCS career mark for punt returns for touchdowns of seven, set by Northern Iowa's Kenny Shedd from 1989-92, and tied the FAMU single-season record for punt returns for TDs of four, with Howard Huckaby (1985-88).

Vann has returned four punts for touchdowns in his last two games. He needs one more TD punt return to tie the NCAA FCS single season mark of five set by North Carolina A&T's Curtis Deloach in 2001.

The Tampa native was named NCAA FCS Special Teams Player of the Week by The Sports Network and MEAC, and will be highlighted in this week's editions of Sports Illustrated.

Jerry Rice headlines 2010 HOF class
Southwestern Athletic Conference
and NFL legend, Jerry Rice, out of Mississippi Valley State, the NFL's all-time leading receiver, and Emmit Smith, the league's all-time leading rusher, headline the 2010 preliminary list for induction in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Rice starred collegiately at MVSU where he teamed with head coach Archie Cooley and quarterback Willie Totten to form the "Satellite Express," an explosive offense that broke several national records. In 1984, Rice made 112 catches for 1,845 yards and 27 touchdowns.

In 1999, MSVU renamed its stadium Rice-Totten field in honor of the prolific duo. After an unprecedented 20-year NFL career, Rice holds every major statistical record for receivers in league history. Rice is one of nine former black college stars on the preliminary list (See STAT CORNER).

Among the other first-year eligible nominees is Aeneas Williams who attended Southern and had a brilliant 14-year career in the league.

The preliminary list includes 103 players, 10 coaches and 18 contributors, including former NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue and longtime team owners Bud Adams, and Art Modell.

Former CAU star has starring role in film
Jonathan Hamm, a former Clark Atlanta football star, will be starring in the movie "Big Fan," which premieres this week in New York and Philadelphia. The film also stars Patton Oswalt, Kevin Corrigan, Michael Rapaport, and Marcia Jean Kurtz.

Hamm, a Riverdale, Georgia native, was recruited by Coach Keith Higdon to come play at CAU where he earned all-SIAC honors at defensive end. He was also a captain on the 2006 squad that finished first in the nation in total defense. He was signed as an undrafted free agent by the New Orleans Saints in 2007, but was released shortly thereafter when he suffered a quad injury during training camp.

Hamm plays Quantrel Bishop in the movie, a pro football star being stalked by his biggest fan. Bishop resorts to violence upon his discovery, which leads to legal trouble right before his team's championship game.
