Fayetteville State leads NCAA Div. II Golf Regional after first day

CIAA golf champion Fayetteville State was first and Virginia State was 20th in the 21-team field after Day One (Mon., May 4) of the Atlantic Region NCAA Div. II Super Regional University Men's Golf Tournament.

The Regional is being hosted by Concord University at the Resort at Glade Springs in Daniel, West Virginia.

The Broncos' squad posted a 16-over par 304 to lead after one day over West Liberty State (309) and Adelphi (312). Derek Scott and Joel Lynn led the Broncos with three over par scores. They were both tied at fifth with two others in a 108-player field. Kevin Lyles scored two birdies on his way to a +5 score (77 ). Lynn was the CIAA player of the year. FSU teed off the second round Tuesday at 12:50 pm.

CIAA runner-up Virginia State was ranked 20th for the day with a 333 score.

NCAA Div. I and Div. II Men's and Women's Tennis Regionals get under way this weekend

CIAA champion Shaw and SIAC champ Tuskegee will be joined by Virginia State, Elizabeth City State and West Virginia State in the NCAA Div. II Women's Tennis Championship regionals which begin this weekend.

The 16 regional winners will advance to the finals in Altamonte Springs, Florida, hosted by the Central Florida Sports Commission and Rollins College, May 13-16.

Shaw (19-2) meets Charleston (WV) (18-8) at California, PA on May 8 after West Va State (14-9) plays West Va Wesleyan (14-4) the previous day in Atlantic Regional I, a five-team Preliminary Round. The WVSU/WVW winner will face host California (PA).

VSU (14-4) will play CIAA rival Elizabeth City State (12-6) in the Preliminary Round of the NCAA's Atlantic Region II at Bloomsburg University in Bloomsburg, Pa. on May 6. The winner of the VSU-Elizabeth City State match will advance to meet host Bloomsburg the following day.

Tuskegee (21-7) faces Nova Southeastern (16-7) on May 7 will the winner meeting host Valdosta State the following day in the South Region II Preliminary Round.

On the men's side, CIAA champion Shaw (20-2) will face Concord (14-5) in Kutztown, PA in Atlantic Regional #1 and Virginia State (13-6) meets West Virginia Wesleyan (17-4) in Buckhannon, W.V. in the Preliminary Round of Atlantic Regional #2.

Morehouse (11-7) will face West Florida (13-9) Thursday (May 7) in Miami Shores, FL during South Regional #1 hosted by Barry University.

In the Div. I championships, SWAC women's champion Jackson State will travel to Atlanta to face host Georgia Tech in the first round of the tournament.

Alcorn State, who the claimed the SWAC men's title, will square off against Mississippi in the first round of its regional. The Braves will head to the campus of LSU in Baton Rouge, Louisiana to face the Rebels.

The MEAC Champion South Carolina State men's and women's tennis teams will take on nationally ranked University of Georgia in the opening round of 2009 NCAA Tennis Championship, beginning May 8-9 at Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens , GA.

The NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Tennis Championships will be held May 14-19 at Texas A&M University.

Hampton Lady Pirates take seventh consecutive MEAC Outdoor track title.
