MEN
1. MORGAN STATE (23-12) - Todd Bozeman's Bears were
most impressive getting wins over Maryland (ACC) and DePaul (Big
East) en route to sweeping MEAC regular season and tournament
titles and earning 15th seed in NCAA Tourney. Bowed to Oklahoma in
first round.
2. CLAFLIN (25-4) - SIAC regular season champs in Div. II
national rankings all year, fell in tourney semis and in semifinal round of
D2 South Regional.
3. ALABAMA STATE (22-10) - Nudged out Jackson State to capture SWAC
regular season and tournament titles. Lost NCAA Div. I play-in game to Morehead State.
4. BENEDICT (24-6) - A close second behind Claflin in SIAC regular season, lost
in SIAC tournament semis and in first round of DIv. II South Regional.
5. JACKSON STATE (18-15) - Finished second to Alabama State in SWAC
regular season and in SWAC tourney finals.
6. VIRGINIA UNION (21-7) - Panthers continued winning ways under new
coach Willard Coker taking CIAA regular season, lost in CIAA finals to JC Smith and in
first round of Atlantic Regional.
7. WEST VIRGINIA STATE (24-6) - Won WVIAC regular season title, lost
in tournament quarterfinals, fell in first round of DIv. II Atlantic Regional.
8. JOHNSON C. SMITH (23-8) - Won first back-to-back CIAA tournament titles
but fell in first round of NCAA Div. II Atlantic Regional.
9. SOUTH CAROLINA STATE (17-14) - Finished behind Morgan State in
MEAC regular season. Lost to Norfolk State in MEAC Tourney semifinals.
10. NORFOLK STATE (13-18) - Spartans tied for third in MEAC regular season
and bowed to Morgan State in tournament finals. |
WOMEN
1. NORTH CAROLINA A&T (26-8) - Patricia Cage-Bibbs squad won MEAC regular season by three games, dominated league's
tournament and received highest seeding ever (#14) for MEAC program
in NCAA Tournament. Gamely lost (83-71) to Florida State in first round.
2. Prairie View A&M (23-11) - Won SWAC by whopping six games, swept to tourney title before losing to Oklahoma in first round of
NCAA Tournament.
3. Fort Valley State (26-5) - Undefeated (22-0) in SIAC regular season,
added SIAC Tourney title before falling in first round of Div. II South Regional.
4. CLARK ATLANTA (23-5) - Finished second to FVSU in SIAC regular season
and SIAC tournament. Lost in first round of South Regional.
5. JOHNSON C. SMITH (20-9) - Third seeded in CIAA tourney, won title to
earn automatic Atlantic Region playoff bid. Lost in first round.
6. SOUTHERN (16-13) - TIed for second in SWAC regular season with Alabama
State, lost to PV in tournament finals and in first round of WNIT.
7. COPPIN STATE (14-15) - Came on late to tie for second in MEAC regular
season, bowed out in Tournament quarters and lost in first round of WNIT.
8. HAMPTON (15-16) - Emerged from crowded field behind NC A&T to make
MEAC tournament finals.
9. FAYETTEVILLE STATE (19-8) - Posted second best CIAA regular season
mark before flaming out in CIAA tournament and first round of Atlantic Regional.
10. DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA (24-5) - Made NCAA Atlantic Region field as
independent. Lost in first round. |
