Early hoops round-up

Black college players are off to relatively good starts when it comes to NCAA stats.

MEN
On the men's Div. I side, Alcorn State junior guard Troy Jackson and Norfolk State guard Michael Deloach are setting the scoring pace. Jackson leads the SWAC and is 17th in the nation averaging 21.1 points per game. Deloach is pacing the MEAC with a 20.8 ppg. average thru nine games. Deloach is 21st in the nation.

South Carolina State has two players among the nation's best shooters from the field. Senior center Jason Johnson is hitting on 65.4% of his shots, ninth best in the nation, while junior forward Jason Flagler is shooting at a 62.7% clip, 14th best nationwide.

Talented 5-10 Alabama State junior guard Trant Simpson's 91.3% free throw shooting ties him for 10th in the nation while backcourt mate 6-2 senior Brandon Brooks' 6.9 assists per game is seventh best. Not to be left out of the stats parade for the Hornets is 7-foot center Chief Kickingstallionsims, whose 3.4 blocks per game is 10th nationally.

On the Div. II level, Johnson C. Smith 6-5 junior center James Dillard is a legitimate stat stuffer. Dillard averages 20.8 points, 9.3 rebounds and 3.4 blocks while shooting 74.7% from the field for the 9-1 Golden Bulls. His field goal percentage numbers are seventh best in the nation. Elizabeth City's do-everything 6-4 forward Anthony Hilliard's 25.2 points per game are third best in the nation while he chimes in with 11.1 rebound per contest which is ninth.

West Virginia State 6-2 senior sharpshooter Ted Scott is scoring 26 points per game, second best in Div. II. Among other standouts, Morehouse forward Jerry Felder leads the nation in field goal percentage (80.5%), Albany State senior guard Scheraun King is sixth in 3-point percentage (55.6%) while Albany State guard Flawaan Flagg is 12th in 3s per game (3.7). St. Paul's center Anthony Wynn is third in rebounds (11.1) and Fort Valley guard Martrez Scott is fourth in steals (3.7).

WOMEN
On the ladies side, St. Paul's forward Tatiana Ellis (24.9 ppg.) is fifth, Clark Atlanta senior guard Shantrell Moss (22.6 ppg.) is eighth and Fort Valley State freshman Shekeya Tarpley (22.0) is 12th in Div. II scoring.

Morgan State junior guard Corin Adams checks in at fourth in steals (4.0 pg.) while shooting 50% (26 of 52) from 3-point range, good for a fourth-place tie in Div. I. Tuskegee freshwoman Delisha Page leads Div. II in blocks (4.8) while Miles guard Ashley Orphey leads in assists (8.4) and is second in steals (4.9). Laquanda Brandon of UDC shoots a sizzlng 96.3% (26 of 27) from the free throw line, second best in Div. II.

In rebounding stats, Sarah Bolden of Bethune-Cookman is 11th in Div. I at 11.1 per game while Tuskegee's Rishaunda Gartrell is 5th in Div. II at 12 per game.
