Down to the wire in MEAC, SWAC, OVC

South Carolina State (8-2, 6-0) has a two-game lead over Hampton (5-4, 4-2) and Morgan State (6-4, 4-2) in the MEAC headed to a showdown this week in Baltimore vs. MSU that could give the Bulldogs their first title since 1994. A win Saturday would clinch the title for SCSU while a loss would force them to beat lowly North Carolina A&T in the regular season finale for both teams in Greensboro, N.C. on Nov. 22. Morgan State needs a win over SCSU and a win in its regular season finale at home vs. Hampton next week to secure the crown. South Carolina State is ranked 17th nationally in the latest Sports Network FCS poll.

In the SWAC East, Jackson State holds a one-game lead over Alabama A&M as they meet in Jackson, Ms., Saturday (3 p.m.). JSU can clinch the title and a second straight trip to the conference title game (Dec. 13 in Birmingham) with a win. A&M would need to beat JSU and then knock off Miss. Valley State in its season finale a week later to take the crown.

It's a three-team race in the SWAC West where Grambling State (8-2, 5-0), who is off this week, is just ahead of Prairie View and Southern. Prairie View (8-1, 5-1) wraps up its regular season and its best season in 40 years at home Saturday vs. Alcorn State (2-8, 1-4). Southern has its last game before a Nov. 29 showdown with Grambling that will likely determine the division winner, Saturday in Mobile (6 p.m.) vs. Alabama State (2-7, 2-4).

Tennessee State (7-2, 5-1), up to 18th in the latest FCS poll, plays at Jacksonville State (7-3, 5-2) Saturday in a crucial Ohio Valley Conference match-up. TSU is currently tied with UT-Martin (7-3, 5-1) and Eastern Kentucky (6-3, 5-1) for first in the OVC but has head-to-head wins over both. Jacksonville State's two conference losses are to UT-M and EKU. Tennessee State finishes the regular season next week at Murray State.
