BCSP Notes . . .Black college players making some noise on the NFL scene It was another banner day for black college players in the NFL this past weekend. Second-year Lane wide receiver/kick returner Jacoby Jones returned a punt 70 yards for a score as Houston won its first game of the season in a 29-28 decision over Miami Sunday. The score was Jones' first career NFL touchdown. Cleveland rookie defensive end Alex Hall (St. Augustine's) got a sack in Monday night's win over the New York Giants. Hall leads all NFL rookies with three sacks. Miami rookie DE Kendall Langford (Hampton) has two. Green Bay's Nick Collins (Bethune-Cookman), who led the Packers with six tackles in Sunday's win over Seattle, is tied for second in the NFL with three interceptions. Tennessee's Nick Harper (Fort Valley State) and Jacksonville's Rashean Mathis (Bethune-Cookman) both have two picks. SWAC basketball TV schedule announced The Southwestern Athletic Conference has announced its 2008-09 basketball television schedule, highlighted by a matchup of last season's men's regular season and tournament champions, and ending with both the men's and women's tournament finals shown live during ESPN's Championship Week. A total of 14 games will be televised live either on ESPN2 or ESPNU. Defending men's regular season champion Alabama State will kickoff the TV schedule on Monday, Jan. 5 against Grambling State in the nightcap of a men's and women's doubleheader on ESPNU. Prairie View A&M's Lady Panthers, the defending women's regular season champion, will play at Arkansas-Pine Bluff as part of a Monday, Jan. 26 doubleheader on ESPNU. This year's television schedule also features a Saturday afternoon game on ESPN2 between defending men's tournament champion Mississippi Valley State playing at Jackson State on Jan. 31. On Mon. Feb. 9, MVSU will play at Alabama State in battle of last season's champions. Polk to lead Bowie State women hoopsters Bowie State Athletic Director Derek Carter officially announced last week the hiring of Donna Polk as the new head coach of the Lady Bulldogs. Polk is no stranger to Bowie State having served the past three years as the associate athletic director for operations/compliance. Polk is a member of the Columbia Union Lady Pioneers' basketball team (1987-1991) and is a member of the 1,000 point club. The Harbeson, Delaware native also played softball for Columbia Union and graduated in May 1992 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Counseling Psychology.
