Burgess named NSU assistant
Norfolk State
head women's basketball coach Tara A. Owens announced Tuesday the hiring of Barbara Burgess as the program's new assistant coach.

Burgess comes to NSU after spending six (2002-08) years as the head girls basketball coach at Phoebus High School in Hampton, Va. While there, Burgess led the Phantoms to a 73-67 overall record. Prior to Phoebus, Burgess was the first female to lead the women's basketball program at Virginia Union. She coached there during the 1999-2001 seasons and compiled a 13-39 record.

Burgess was a four-year Black College All-American at Delaware State from 1985-89. The forward/center was named to the MEAC All-Rookie team after her freshman season and ended her career as DSU's No. 2 all-time leading scorer with 1,807 points. As a sophomore, she led the team in scoring (17.9 points per game) and rebounding (7.3 rebounds per game) and was named to the All-MEAC First Team. Burgess also led DSU in scoring as a junior in 1998-89 (17.1 ppg) and earned first-team all-conference honors the same year. She was DSU's Female Athlete of the Year in 1988 and 1989 and helped the Lady Hornets to the 1989 MEAC Tournament Championship. For her athletic accomplishments, Burgess was inducted into the DSU Athletic Hall of Fame in 2000. She graduated from DSU in 1990 with a bachelor's degree in health and physical education.
