What's Going On In and Around Black College Sports
ST. AUG'S SWEEPS CIAA TRACK: The 2008 CIAA Indoor Track and Field
Championships turned out to be another coronation for
Saint Augustine's College. The Falcons won both the CIAA men's
and women's titles in convincing fashion Sunday (Feb. 10)
at Christopher Newport University's Freeman Center.
The indoor championships were the 37th overall for the
Falcons (23 Men, 14 Women), who are the defending
2007 NCAA Division II Men and Women Indoor
Champions. The Falcons scored 218 points to easily win the men's
title. Bowie State finished second with 73 points, followed
by Virginia State with 55 points. The Lady Falcons
scored 151 points to claim the women's crown. Bowie
State finished second with 113 points and Virginia State
was third with 91 points. The Falcons, led by track
MVP Chayce Smith and field MVP Joe
Kindred, won 10 of 14 events. Smith won the one-mile run and 800 meters,
and Kindred, the 2007 CIAA indoor field MVP, won the
high jump and long jump. St. Aug's Erica
Young captured the 400 and 800 meters to win track MVP honors. She led
the Lady Falcons to eight victories in 12 events.
Elaine Rhoades of Bowie State was selected the female field MVP.
UDC TO HOST TOURNEY: The University of the District of
Columbia will host the 2008 National Independent Colleges Basketball
Tournaments, February 23-26, and March 1-4, 2008. Who are the
Independent Schools? They are NCAA Division II
member colleges that are not affiliated with a collegiate
athletic conference, but who compete against each other and
colleges that are conference aligned. The Tournaments
were inaugurated in 2006, and hosted by Florida Gulf Coast
for two years. However, now that FGCU has upgraded
its athletic program to NCAA Division I status, UDC
is hosting the 2008 Tournaments. The Women's
Independent Schools Tournament is scheduled for February
23-26, 2008 at the Physical Activities Center of UDC. Along
with the host, seven other Independent Colleges are
scheduled to participate including Central
State, Wilberforce and Chowan. The Men's Tournament is scheduled for
March 1-4 with Central State and Wilberforce among seven
others joining UDC.
COMEGY GETS EXTENSION: While Jackson
State head football coach Rick Comegy signed new players to his
team, he also made a commitment to Jackson State. Comegy
agreed to a contract extension that will keep him at the helm
of the Tigers' program through the 2011 season. His
initial four-year contract would have expired at the end of 2009.
After two seasons as head coach, Comegy has led
the Tigers to their first Southwestern Athletic
Conference championship since 1996. Comegy's Tigers defeated the Grambling State Tigers
42-31, to capture JSU's 16th SWAC Championship in
December. Under Comegy, the Tigers have compiled a
14-9 overall record.
