Former Steeler Holmes felled in car accident

Ernie Holmes, a product of Texas Southern and a two-time Super Bowl champion with the Pittsburgh Steelers, died last week after his car left a road and rolled several times near Lumberton, about 80 miles from Houston, a Texas Department of Public Safety dispatcher said. He was 59. Holmes, driving alone and not wearing a seat belt, was ejected and died at the scene, the department said.

Holmes, drafted out of TSU in the eighth round of the 1971 draft, was part of a defense that held Minnesota to 17 yards rushing and 119 total yards in the 1975 Super Bowl. The Steelers won their first title, 16-6. They were back a year later, beating Dallas 21-17 for the championship. He played five of his six years in the NFL with Pittsburgh.

The Steelers remembered him as a devastating and intimidating force on a defense full of them. He was part of a famous front four that included "Mean" Joe Greene, L.C. Greenwood (Arkansas-Pine Bluff) and Dwight White. "Ernie was a very colorful person that you couldn't help but like off the football field a little different on the field as we well know," White said. "Ernie had gotten into the ministry and ... was a true inspiration to Joe, L.C., and myself when we were together. You know, it's all about where you end up, and Ernie blossomed into an individual that I respected, admired and will miss."

Former Oklahoma State QB transferring to Texas Southern

Former Oklahoma State quarterback Bobby Reid said Friday he will join new head coach Johnny Cole at Texas Southern for his final season rather than keep himself eligible for the NFL draft.

Reid, who decided to leave the Cowboys after a season in which he was benched after two games, made the decision hours after the NCAA granted him a waiver to transfer to a Championship Subdivision school. Reid's decision was first reported by Houston television station KRIV. He graduated from OSU in December.

Reid entered last season seemingly entrenched as the Cowboys' starter, having held the job since midway through his freshman season. But he left a Sept. 8 game against Florida Atlantic with an injury, opening the door for Zac Robinson, who started Oklahoma State's last 11 games. Reid played sparingly for the rest of the season.

Reid went to high school at Galena Park North Shore in suburban Houston and was one of the most highly touted recruits in OSU history. Reid sat out his freshman year after he suffered a shoulder injury in OSU's 2004 spring game, an injury that went undetected in high school. He started all 13 games as a sophomore, passing for 2,266 yards, 24 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He rushed for 500 yards and five scores. After leading OSU to a 7-6 season in 2005, capped by a win in the Independence Bowl, Reid was considered one of the top quarterbacks in the Big 12.

TSU went 0-11 last season under head coach Steve Wilson.
