What's Going On In and Around Black College Sports
An all-star football game for black college seniors
will debut later this month at Titan Field at Cal State
Fullerton. The Fight On Foundation's inaugural
Navy - Army American Heritage Bowl will be played on
January 26 at 6:15 p.m. and will be televised by tape delay
on ESPNU on Friday, Feb. 8 at 4 p.m. Delaware
State Head Coach Al Lavan and Jackson State
Head Coach Rick Comegy have agreed to
coach the two teams, with Lavan coaching the Navy
Northeast Team and Comegy handling the Marine Corps Southwest team. Lavan, who guided
the Hornets to the 2007 Mid Eastern Athletic
Conference championship, will bring his coaching staff along
with seven Hornet seniors CB Akeem
Green, MLB Russell Reeves, OG Jeremy
Breath, DE Kelly Rouse, PK Peter
Gaertner, P Josh Bright and TE Jeff
Postell, Comegy, who led Jackson State to the 2007
Southwestern Athletic Conference Championship will also be joined by his
staff. JSU all-SWAC linebacker Daniel Brooks
is the only Tiger confirmed so far to play in the game, according to
JSU Sports Information Director Wesley
Peterson who expects full rosters to be named this week. The game is
presented by the Henry Nicholas III Foundation and the Fight
On! Foundation. The players and coaches will be spending
the week prior to the game at Disneyland's Paradise Pier Hotel.
The weeks activities include dinner at the ESPN
Zone, visits to Disneyland, California Adventure, San
Diego Navy Facility and Camp Pendleton, participation in
the "Rib Bowl" sponsored by Bad To The Bone; as well
as Media and Combine Day at Titan Field. The Rib Bowl
will be hosted by the Nicholas Foundation. According to
organizers, the event is partnering with the Navy and
Marines because it is the Fight On! Foundation's goal and
primary purpose is to support youth development through
education and athletic endeavors with secured partnerships in
the public, private and military sectors.
