SWAC all-conference team named

The Southwestern Athletic Conference has announced its 2007 All-Conference football selections highlighted by ten repeat selections from last season and their top individual performers. The teams and individual award winner were selected by nominations and votes from the member schools' coaches and sports information contacts along with selected members of the media.

Nine of the 10 SWAC schools had a representative on the first-team with Alabama A&M leading the list with six selections. SWAC East Division champ Jackson State had four first-teamers while Alabama State, West Division champ Grambling State and Southern each had three first-team selections. A&M and Southern led all schools with nine players each on the first and second units.

Alabama State senior running back Jay Peck was named the league's offensive player of the year with Prairie View senior lineman Zach East earning the defensive player of the year award. Grambling State running back Frank Warren grabbed the freshman of the year award while Arkansas-Pine Bluff wide receiver/kick returner Bruce Peters was named newcomer of the year.

Peck was the only SWAC rusher to top 1,000 yards, finishing with 1,186 while scoring six touchdowns. Peck added 177 receiving yards to finish third in the conference in all-purpose yards. East totalled 127 tackles to lead the SWAC (12.7 per game) to lead the SWAC, 14.5 of those for losses including three sacks. Warren keyed the Grambling ground attack racking up 862 yards, third best in the SWAC, while scoring four touchdowns. Peters led the league in punt returns at 11.0 yards per return.

Peck and East were first team selections while Warren and Peters were named to the second team.

Simpson, McCullough lead MEAC grid stars

Morgan State running back Chad Simpson and Bethune-Cookman linebacker Ronnie McCullough earned the top individual awards as the Mid Eastern Athletic Conference unveiled its all-conference team and top honors last week.

Running back Phillip Sylvester of Florida A&M earned the rookie of the year award and South Carolina State's James Lee was selected as the Offensive Lineman of the Year.

Coach of the Year honors went to Norfolk State head coach Pete Adrian who led the Spartans to their best conference record since moving to Division I in 1997 with a 8-3 overall finish, 6-2 in the MEAC. Under Adrian's guidance, the 2007 NSU football team earned the program's first-ever FCS national ranking, reaching as high as No. 23.

Simpson led the MEAC in rushing with 1,402 yards and was second in all-purpose yards (161.6). He finished ninth in the NCAA Division-I (FCS) in rushing yards. McCullough led the nation (FCS) in tackles with a total of 149. He collected 59 solo and 90 assisted tackles for the Wildcats this season including three 20-plus outings. McCullough also tallied 20 tackles for a loss of 65 yards, tied for sixth best in the NCAA, in addition to five sacks for the season. Sylvester averaged 85.8 yards per game (858 total), while leading the MEAC in all-purpose yards with 164.3 per game. Lee was a key performer on the line of an offense that gained 4,418 total offensive yards including 2,904 rushing yards.
