BCSP Notes . . .Prairie View A&M, Bethune-Cookman go down swinging in Div. I baseball playoffsMEAC champion Bethune-Cookman battled Florida State tough in its first game Friday but was eliminated in a rout by Stetson Saturday in opening round NCAA Div. I Regional playoff baseball games in Tallahassee over the weekend. Alejandro Jiminez had a second inning home run to lead the Wildcat offense. B-CU had just seven hits against three Stetson pitchers in being eliminated in a 12-0 loss Saturday. The Hatters banged out 14 hits and scored three runs in the third inning, six in the fourth and capped it off with three more in the ninth. Angel Mercado and Drew Clark each had two hits to pace the 'Cats. Starter Justin Blackwell took the loss. The Wildcats finished the season at 33-27. SWAC titleist Prairie View A&M was shut out by host Rice in its first game Friday in the NCAA Regional and was eliminated on Saturday by Baylor. The Panthers were held to only five hits and committed six costly errors in losing its first game to Rice, 5-0. The Panther put runners in scoring position on four occasions but could never get a run home. Matthew Chase took the loss after giving up six hits an four runs, only three of them earned, in six innings of work. The Panthers (34-25) had only two miscues Saturday but fell behind Baylor 7-1 early before suffering a 9-2 defeat. The Panthers managed seven hits, two by designated hitter Greg Ford, but were only able to push across single runs in the fifth and seventh innings. Baylor had 13 hits, eight of them and seven earned runs against Prairie View starter FAMU Statement "Coach (Michael) Gillespie has been placed on paid administrative leave until such time that the pending criminal charges have been resolved," said FAMU Athletic Director Nelson Townsend Wednesday. Gillespie was charged two weeks ago with stalking a woman. He was released on $1,000 bail and on the condition that he wear a GPS tracking system and stay away from the woman. Challenge Changes Both games were originally scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 2. The announcement came after several weeks of negotiations between ESPN and officials from the MEAC, SWAC and Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC). The Challenge kickoff will be on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. Central (3:00 p.m. Eastern Time) and the contest will be televised live nationally on ESPN Classic. © 2007 Azeez Communications, Inc. |
