O'NEAL PLAYS WELL IN S.C.: Former Jackson State golfer Tim O'Neal got his biggest payday and
second highest
finish of the year last weekend at the Nationwide Tour's
BMW Charity Pro-Am at the Cliffs in South Carolina. O'Neal
shot rounds of 70-71-67-69 for a 9-under 277 total over the
three courses that make up the tournament, good for a tie for
13th place behind winner Nick Flanagan (-15, 271). It
was O'Neal's second top 20 finish of the season. He
pocketed $12,187.50 for his efforts and moved up to 59th on the Tour's Money List with
$59,776. O'Neal has played in eight events on the Nationwide
this season and has missed the cut in three. His best finish was
a tie for 12th in the season-opening Movistar Open in
Panama where he pocketed $11,550.
SWAC BASEBALL ALL-STARS: Senior shortstop Michael Richard of league champion Prairie View, who led the SWAC in hitting (.407) and stolen bases (39), was named the conference's player of the year and outstanding hitter as the league unveiled its baseball all-stars. Fellow Panther Matthew Chase, who led the SWAC in wins (9), was named the pitcher of the year. Jackson State outfielder James Sims, who led the league in runs scored (69), was named newcomer of the year while Kyle Smith of Texas Southern (.361, 26 RBI) was named newcomer of the year. Jackson State, Prairie View and Southern each had five members on the all conference teams.
