FSU, B-CU capture golf titles

The men of Fayetteville State and the women of Bethune-Cookman were among four schools that claimed their second consecutive team titles at the 2007 PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championship completed Sunday at the PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida.

Fayetteville State shot a final round 4-under-par 284 in the three-round affair to go back-to-back on the Div. II level. The Broncos tallied a total of 12-under-par 852 to break the 54-hole record of 853 previously set by Johnson & Wales in 2003. Lincoln (Mo.) secured second place after finishing with a three-day-total of 25-over, 889. Morehouse finished third (904).

In the women's division, Bethune-Cookman successfully defended its title with a 913 total. Texas Pan-American finished second (950) with South Carolina State third (1052). B-CU sophomore Ebonie Burgess was the medalist in the women's division with a three-round total of 224. Burgess and her teammates captured five of the top six positions en route to the 37-stroke victory over UTPA.

Texas Pan American made a furious back-nine comeback to capture the Division I Men's team championship in the closest team competition of the event.

The Broncs began the day six shots back of second-round leader Florida A&M, but were able to retain the title by firing a 1-over-par 289 for a championship-total 6-over-par 870. Bethune-Cookman shot a 2-under 286 Sunday to finish one shot back with a three-day-total of 871. Florida A&M slipped to third place, another shot back at 872. Senior Jason Still of Florida A&M from Lawnside, N.J., carded a tournament-low 6-under-par 66 to capture the Men's Division I Individual Medalist honors. Daniel Venema of B-CU from Ormond Beach, Fla., began the day 1-stroke off the pace, and fired his third consecutive sub-par round with a 71, to secure second place.

In the NAIA Division, Johnson & Wales University of North Miami, Fla., won for the second consecutive year, defeating Edward Waters by 31 strokes.

Derek Scott, a junior at Fayetteville State from Hope Mills, N.C., shot a final-round 2-under-par 70 to win the Division II Individual Medalist honors. Scott prevailed by one stroke over teammate Joel Lynn, a freshman from Fayetteville, who carded a final round 1-over-par 71 and by four strokes over teammate Ian Milne, a senior from Fayetteville, who fired a final round 3-under-par 69.

In the Independent Men's Division, Vincent Johnson, a junior from Oregon State fired a blistering 4-under-par 68 in the final round to finish 12-strokes clear of second-place finishers Willie Mack III, a freshman from Bethune-Cookman.

In the Independent Women's Division, Georgette Rolle, a senior at Texas Southern from Nassau, Bahamas defeated Sara Young, a junior at Florida State from Jacksonville, Fla., after birdieing the first playoff hole to claim the 2007 title. Young made up three shots during the final round to tie after 54-holes and forced a playoff, but Rolle's putter finally caught fire as she sank a 12-foot birdie on the 500-yard par-5 hole No. 1 of the Wanamaker Course.

Over 170 contestants from 36 colleges and universities, representing 13 countries comprised the field for the 2007 PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championship.

State Farm Insurance and The Golf Channel have combined to produce one-hour Championship highlight programs, which will air on June 6 at 3:00 p.m. E.D.T. and on June 23 at 4:00 p.m. E.D.T.
