MVSU wins fourth consecutive softball title
Southern defeated MVSU 1-0 to force the necessary and deciding game Sunday. In Game 10, Southern pitcher Jennifer Hodrick pitched a three-hit shutout while teammate Tiffiany Dardville used an RBI double to score Courtney Chappell in the first inning for the game's only run. In the second game on Sunday, the Devilettes used a three-run rally with two outs in the fifth inning to clinch the title. MVSU outfielder Shaina Mitchell was named the tournament's most outstanding player with a superb performance over the four days of play. She finished 8-for-14 with two homers (one a game-winner), five runs, four RBIs and three doubles. She had a hand in seven of the Devilettes runs scored and accounted for the winning run in each of MVSU's three tournament wins. She was especially key during Sunday's deciding game as she was 3-for-3 (solo HR in the 1st, single in the 3rd, and a double in the 5th). All-tournament team
Alabama State women, Grambling men take outdoor track and field titles
Alabama State finished with 190 points to outscored Southern (156). Third-place Grambling State with 127 points and Jackson State with 117 were the other teams to top the century mark. Jewell Wells of the Lady Hornets was named top women's track performer. Wells took home the gold in the women's 3,000 meter steeplechase and the 10,000 meter run. She also placed second in the 5,000 meters and 1,500 meters. Monica Robinson of Southern was the top women's field performer placing first in the pole vault, second in the long jump and third in the high jump. She also placed first in the women's 100 meter hurdles. On the men's side, Kerone Fairweather of GSU took the top track performer honors. Fairweather won the men's 10,000 meter run and the 3,000 meter steeplechase. He also placed second in the men's 1,500 meters and the 5,000 meters. Prairie View A&M's Marcus Carter was named the top field performer. Carter won the men's hammer throw, while also placing second in the discus throw and third in the shot put.

MOST OUTSTANDING PLAYER: Shashank Kulkarni, Alcorn State MEAC MEAC Outdoor track and field this week in Baltimore at Morgan State VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) will host the men and women's outdoor track and field championships May 3-5 at Hughes Stadium on the campus of Morgan State University in Baltimore, Md. The championship will begin Thursday at 10 a.m. with the men's decathlon and women's heptathlon events. The Norfolk State men's team will attempt to capture their second straight title and fourth overall. The Spartans swept the MEAC track titles (cross country, indoor and outdoor) last season. With a win at the MEAC outdoors, Norfolk State could become the first team in conference history to win all three MEAC track titles two years in a row. On the women's side, the Lady Pirates of Hampton are vying for their second consecutive outdoor title and fifth overall. The last time Hampton won back-to-back MEAC Outdoor Track and Field titles was 2002-2004 when they recorded three consecutive wins. Senior Yvette Lewis, the 2006 MEAC Outdoor Performer, leads Hampton with seven NCAA East Regional qualifying marks. Friday's action features the continuation of the women's heptathlon and men's decathlon events. Opening ceremonies will begin at 1 p.m. followed by the women's and men's long jump and women's shot put trials and finals. The remainder of the day will highlight the women's pole vault, men's discus, men's high jump, women's javelin and men's and women's 5000m. Semifinal races in the men's and women's 4x100m, 1500m, 100m hurdles, 110m hurdles, 400m, 100m, 800m, 400m hurdles and 200m will also take place on Friday. The final day of competition will begin at 10 a.m. with the men's and women's triple jump, men's shot put, men's pole vault and women's discus. The competition will also feature the high jump, as well as the 4x100m, 1500m, 100m hurdles, 110m hurdles, 400m, 100m, 800m, 400m hurdles and 3000m steeple chase finals. The championship will conclude with the men's and women's 4x400m relays. Admission for the MEAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships is $5 for adults and $3 for children, students, and senior citizens. Tickets may be purchased at the door the day of the event.
