CIAA

The Bowie State men (13-5, 9-5) are the hottest team in the CIAA right now.

Behind CIAA and scoring leader Gil Goodrich, the Bulldogs have run off four straight wins over title contenders Virginia Union (92-70), Johnson C. Smith (92-80), Elizabeth City State (109-101) and Fayetteville State (72-64).

Goodrich averaged 33.6 points in the first three wins and then had 13 points and 10 assists vs. FSU.

St. Augustine's (15-5, 11-3) has the best record in the conference headed into the final three weeks of the regular season. The Falcons, led by senior guard Antonio Fitzgerald (22.3 ppg.) who trails only Goodrich (26.8) in conference scoring stats, have won 11 of their last 12 games including a 76-69 win over Virginia Union Saturday. Three-time defending Tournament champion VUU currently has the second-best record in league play at 10-4.

In key games this week, Bowie State is at St. Aug's Thursday (7:30 p.m.) and Virginia State (14-6, 9-4) and Virginia Union meet Saturday (7:30 p.m.) in Richmond. Virginia State hosted JC Smith Tuesday.

On the women's side, Elizabeth City State (16-5, 13-1) has a three-game lead over its nearest rival, North Carolina Central (14-5, 9-3). ECSU center Celeste Trahan continues to lead the CIAA in scoring (19.9 ppg.) and rebounding (12.1 rpg.).

SWAC

Juan Wyatt's 34 points Saturday led Alcorn State past Jackson State (88-80) and dropped JSU into a tie with Mississippi Valley State, both at 8-3, atop the men's standings. MVSU, led by senior guard Standford Speech got wins over Alabama State and Alabama A&M.

Grambling and Alcorn State, both 7-4, are tied for third place. Alcorn plays at MVSU Saturday (7:30 p.m.)

Alabama A&M (15-7, 11-0) has a three-game lead in the women's race over Jackson State and Alcorn State, both at 8-3. Prairie View, under former WNBA star Cynthia Cooper, is solidly in fourth at 7-3.

SIAC

Benedict (15-1, 12-0) is running away with the men's race and is currently the No. 1 team in the South Region of Div. II basketball. The Fort Valley State women (15-6, 12-2) have a half-game lead over the women of Benedict (12-6, 11-2).

MEAC Women

Two-time women's tournament champion Coppin State (15-6, 10-0) has been unchallenged so far in the MEAC women's race. The Lady Eagles play at Norfolk State Saturday and Hampton on Monday.
