Let the Draft games begin

Defensive back Travarous Bain, linebacker Justin Durant and running back Alonzo Coleman of Hampton along with defensive back Michael Coe of Alabama State are the black college senior footballers named to participate in postseason all-star games this season.

The quartet will play for the East squad in the Saturday, January 20th East/West Shrine Game at Reliant Stadium in Houston. Pro Football Hall of Fame coach Don Shula will coach the East team. The game will be televised on ESPN2.

The East/West Game is one of three such all-star contests to be played this year, along with the Jan. 14th Hula Bowl and the Jan 27th Senior Bowl.

Neither the Senior Bowl, which attracts over 700 NFL coaches to Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile, Al., or the Hula Bowl, played at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii, has a black college player on its current roster this year..

The Hampton trio is among a group of some seven players (See list at right) that are expected to get several looks as they prepare for the upcoming draft season. Each also has a shot at getting an invite to the NFL Scouting Combine held Feb. 21-27 at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis. Foremost among this year's prospects is Bain, a defensive back that has been rated by some draft experts among the top ten cornerback prospects.

The NFL Draft is set for April 28-29 at Radio City Music Hall in New York.

Petty decides on Delaware State

Former Howard University Head Football Coach, Ray Petty, has decided to accept the offer of Delaware State Head Coach Al Lavan to become the Hornets' new defensive coordinator.

Lavan released the news Tuesday saying, "I am pleased to get a coach of his experience and expertise. His defensive teams have been in the top three of the conference every year since I have been at DSU."

Petty is joining the staff at DSU after serving five years at the helm of the Howard program.

"This is a great opportunity to be able to come in and make a contribution to DSU's program and work with Coach Lavan," said Petty. "I am looking forward to building a solid program that is already set up for championship success."

During his time at Howard, Petty put together a 25-20 overall record. He had served as assistant head coach and defensive coordinator at Howard from 1992-99. He also did stints as an assistant at Southern and North Carolina A&T.
