Quarterback Chris Wallace of West Division champ Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Texas Southern defensive back Stacey Thomas won the highest individual awards as the Southwestern Athletic Conference unveiled voting by head coaches and sports information directors for its all-conference team this week.

Wallace, a 6-1, 180-pounder from Kankakee, Ill, led the surprising Golden Lions to the West Division title completing 61.8% of his passes for 1,978 yards, 19 TDs and only seven interceptions. Wallace led the SWAC in pass efficiency (169.8) and finished second in the nation in that category. He was second in the league in passing yards (179.8 ypg.) and third in total offense (195.4 ypg.)

At 6-foot, 200-pounds, Thomas, a native of New Orleans, led the conference in tackles (114) averaging 10.4 stops per game. He also had one sack, four fumble recoveries, 13 passes defended and five interceptions.

Versatile Arkansas-Pine Bluff RB/WR/KR Dedrick Poole was named the SWAC's top newcomer. Poole, a 6-foot senior, led the conference in all-purpose yards (150.3 ypg.) and set the school-record for the longest run from scrimmage with a 97-yard jaunt vs. Grambling State. Poole, who also led the SWAC in kickoff returns (26.9 ypr.), notched five touchdowns as a runner and another four as a receiver. He rushed for 240 rushing yards and 504 receiving yards.

Another versatile performer, Alabama A&M's Ulysses Banks took home the SWAC freshman of the year award. The 5-foot-10, 195-lb., running back/return specialist from Birmingham, AL, played in nine games this season. On 12 kickoff return opportunities, he averaged 35.4 yards per return while returning two kickoffs for touchdowns. He gained 425 yards on 12 returns with a long of 99. He finished the season first in Division I-AA in kick returns.

The Dec. 16 SWAC Championship Game participants led the selections. East Division champion Alabama A&M was tops with ten selections, six to the first team. Arkansas-Pine Bluff had a total of seven with five on the first team, all on offense. Southern, Grambling State, Mississippi Valley State and Jackson State each had five selections.
