SIAC ACCOLADES: Lane head coach Johnny Cole and wide receiver/kick returner Jacoby Jones
joined Albany State
defensive lineman Alton Pettway as the top individual award winners
as the SIAC named its 2006 all-conference team, top players
and coach. Second-year head coach Cole took home the coach of
the year award after leading the Dragons from a winless (0-10)
2005 season to a 8-3 overall finish and 5-2 conference mark this
season, tied for second with Tuskegee. Jones was his main
offensive weapon and won both the offensive player of the year and most valuable player
awards. Jones led the SIAC in receiving yards per game
(74.7), receptions per game (6.18), receiving touchdowns (6),
all-purpose yards (189.9) and punt return average (13.8).
He returned two kickoffs and one punt for touchdowns
and finished second in the league in scoring with ten
touchdowns. Pettway won the defensive player of the year
honor for the second straight season. He led the conference
in sacks (14.5) and tackles for loss (21.5) while helping
the Golden Rams claim their fourth straight SIAC title.
