HOW THEY DID IT - Game Recaps

BIG SWAC DECISIONS

  • Jackson State 31, Southern 28, 2 OTs

The JSU Blue Tigers (5-1, 4-0) scored 14 fourth quarter points on two long drives to tie the game at 28 and then got a 16-yard Eric Perri field goal in the second overtime to knock off Southern. After stopping JSU with an interception in the first overtime, usually reliable placekicker Brett Ackley missed a chance to win it for the Jags (3-3, 2-3) as he missed a field goal from 29 yards out. SU head coach Pete Richardson eschewed a field goal try in the second OT at the JSU 5 and RB Nicholas Benjamin was thrown for a three-yard loss. JSU QB Jimmie Oliver rushed 14 times for 101 yards but lost 32 yards on three sacks. Oliver also passed for 224 yards (12-18-2) with TD passes of 70 and 67 yards to WR Jaymar Johnson (7 rec., 199 yds.). Southern QB CJ Byrd completed 12 of 19 passes for 189 yards but threw two picks. Byrd also rushed for a score.

  • Arkansas-Pine Bluff 33, No. 4 Grambling State 28

UAPB QB Chris Wallace (12-15-0, 162 yards) and WR Jason Jones (5 rec., 85 yards) hooked up for their second TD of the day, this one from 33 yards out with 7:21 left that was the difference in the Golden Lions' (3-3, 2-2) upset of Grambling (2-4, 2-2) before 30,216 fans in Little Rock, Arkansas. Jones caught a 37-yarder from Wallace midway thru the second quarter. UAPB RB Martell Mallett, the SWAC's leading rusher, had another big game running 26 times for 143 yards including a 64-yard scamper to paydirt in the second quarter. UAPB RB Dedrick Poole (4 carries, 103 yards), an Arkansas transfer, had a 97-yard third-quarter TD run. UAPB rushed for 246 yards and outgained the G-Men, 408 to 396. GSU WR Clyde Edwards had ten receptions for 145 yards including TD receptions of 4 and 28 yards. GSU QB Brandon Landers (21 of 47) threw for 300 yards for the two TDs with one interception.
