SIAC showing big in Stats
Through the first month of the regular season, SIAC players are making a strong bids to win many of the black college individual statistical categories (See STAT CORNER).

Sitting atop the black college passing and total offense stats is Morehouse senior quarterback, Ruben DuPree. He is joined as a statistical leader by Lane wide receiver/kick returner Jacoby Jones, bruising Kentucky State running back Roni Robinson and pass-rusher extraordinaire, Alton Pettway of Albany State.

DuPree, who has seen spot duty under center, sometimes starting, in his previous years in the Morehouse program, has raised his game to another level since beginning the season as the Maroon Tigers' starter.

Through five games, the 5-8, 185-pounder has averaged 278 passing yards per game and 292 yards of total offense per game, both tops among black college quarterbacks .

The Benjamin Mays High School product had his best game in a losing effort against Kentucky State two weeks ago. DuPree threw for a whopping 445 yards, breaking the Morehouse single-game record by by over 100 yards. He completed 30 of 49 passes and had three TD tosses. One of them went for 70 yards to teammate and brother, Ravenell DuPree.

"He has a strong, accurate arm, he's fast and elusive," said Morehouse SID Yusuf Davis. "He produces what I call 'Houdini acts,' as he escapes from defenders who think they've got him cornered. He's exciting to watch and the fans love him." DuPree started four games in 2004 and another five last year before earning the starting job in head coach Terry Beauford's offense this season.

The rushing leader so far this season is Kentucky State RB Roni Robinson. The 6-3, 225 Frankfort, Ky., native rushed for nearly 1,000 yards in 2004. In his best outing this season, he rushed for 192 yards in the Thorobreds win over Morehouse and has topped the 100-yard mark in all five of KSU's games this season. Robinson has scored five TDs including a 54-yarder vs. Morehouse.

"He's a bulldog runner," said KSU SID Ron Braden. "He will run you over but he has some speed. He doesn't have breakaway speed, but he can run."

Pettway, who led the SIAC in sacks last year, is averaging 1.3 per game through five games.
