ASBERRY NEW SHAW COACH: Former North Carolina Central Offensive Coordinator and Assistant Head Coach Darrell Asberry, who was also a former quarterback during his playing days at Jackson State, was named on June 28 as the new head football coach at Shaw.

In naming Asberry as the replacement for former head coach Deondri Clark, who resigned to become head coach at Fort Valley State, Shaw now has its third coach since reviving its football program four years ago. Gregory Ruffin was Shaw's coach in 2002.

Asberry, who reportedly signed a five-year contract, is coming off his most successful campaign in two years at NCCU, helping the Eagles claim their first CIAA grid title in 25 years and make an appearance in the NCAA Div. II playoffs. His innovative offensive schemes were instrumental in NCCU's title and playoff run under head coach Rod Broadway. The Eagles led the CIAA in scoring offensive averaging nearly 31 points per game. His offense had similar success in his first year in Durham, leading the league in total offense, scoring offense and passing offense.

The Baton Rouge, Louisiana, native is a 1994 graduate of Jackson State with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice. He lettered two seasons at the quarterback position, earning team MVP honors as a senior. After his collegiate career he went on to play professionally as a wide receiver and quarterback with the Shreveport Pirates of the Canadian Football League in 1994-95 and was a wide receiver with the Amsterdam Admirals of the World Football League in 1995-96.

Asberry began his coaching career as offensive coordinator, wide receivers and quarterbacks coach at Albany State (1997-1998).  He returned to his alma mater in 1999 and became running backs coach, before being promoted to offensive coordinator in 2000. In 2001, JSU led the NCAA Div. I-AA ranks in passing with a 344 yards per game average and in 2002 they led the nation in total offensive yards with a 485 yards per game average. In 2003 after the departure of head coach Robert Hughes at JSU, he joined the staff at Coahoma Community College (Clarksdale, MS) as offensive coordinator.

Asberry is taking over the SU program that has seen success with a four year 29-13 (.690) record since it was reinstated in 2002.
