Black college athletes shine at USA Nationals

NEW BLOODS
Morehouse junior Keith Moffatt (l.) and Hampton junior Yvette Lewis (c.) show the form that propelled them to top-3 finishes at the AT&T USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships last week in Indianapolis. SIAC and NCAA Div. II champion Moffatt cleared 7 feet, 6 1/2 inches to finish second in the men's high jump. Lewis, the MEAC 100 meter hurdles and triple jump champion and record holder, soared 44 feet, 1/2 inch to take third in the women's triple jump. At the same meet, North Carolina Central freshman Brandon Jones (r.) took first place in the junior men's 800 meters, a win that qualifies him for the 2006 IAAF World Junior Championships in Beijing, China set for Aug. 15-20. Jones won the 800 meters, 1,500 meters and 5,000 meters to take MVP honors at the CIAA Outdoor Championships and finished third at the NCAA Div. II championships. Also earning a spot in Beijing was St. Augustine's freshman Joe Kindred (not pictured) who cleared 7 feet, 1 1/2 inches to win the USA Outdoor junior high jump title.
