What's Going On In and Around Black College Sports

BELL OUT AT JACKSON STATE: Jackson State fired head football coach James Bell Monday ending a nearly three-year ordeal that had seen its once proud program fall to 8-23 under his guidance. The decision followed Saturday's 64-36 thrashing at the hands of Arkansas-Pine Bluff, a team that came in with a 1-6 record. The 64 points matched the most ever allowed by a Jackson State team and ensured their third straight losing season. A crowd of only 2,831 showed up for Saturday's game in Jackson. Before Bell's arrival, the Tigers were the perennial leaders in NCAA Div. I-AA attendance. JSU is 2-6 overall and 2-4 in the SWAC East Division this season. In Bell's first two seasons, JSU finished 2-10 and 4-7. Quarterbacks coach Daryl Jones will serve as interim coach for the final three games of the season.

GREEN IN THE NBA: Six-seven swingman Devin Green, the former Hampton and MEAC basketball standout, has made the NBA's Los Angeles Lakers' opening day roster as an undrafted free agent. Green was the 2001-02 MEAC Rookie of the Year and a two-time all-MEAC performer. The other black college products on opening day NBA rosters are Dallas guard Darrell Armstrong (Fayetteville State), Detroit center Ben Wallace (Virginia Union), New York Knicks' center Jerome James (Florida A&M) and Seattle guard Ronald Murray (Shaw).
