PIONEER BOWL VIII TO CHARLOTTE: The 2005 Pioneer Bowl is headed to Charlotte. The
game will be held on Saturday, December 3 at Memorial
Stadium. The game, featuring teams from the
CIAA and SIAC, was moved from Mobile, Al.,
because of logistical concerns following the aftermath of
Hurricane Katrina. The game will be televised live on ESPN
Classic. "Regrettably, we have had to move the Pioneer Bowl
from Mobile," said CIAA Commissioner Leon
Kerry. "However, we are excited about the
prospects of the Pioneer Bowl in Charlotte. Other locations were considered, however,
with the 2006 CIAA Tournament coming to Charlotte, we
already know the Queen City is one of America's great sports
cities." The first Pioneer Bowl game was played in 1997 in
Atlanta when Kentucky State downed Livingstone 30-28. Last
year in Mobile, Shaw downed Tuskegee 30-28, ending the
CIAA's three-game losing streak to the SIAC. The SIAC has a
5-2 edge in previous games. "This is a wonderful opportunity
to showcase both the SIAC, the CIAA and the Charlotte
community, not only within the region but around the
nation, since the game will be broadcast to millions through
ESPN Classic," said SIAC Commissioner Dr. William
Lide.
