SMITH, HOOPS IN AT UDC: University of the District of Columbia President William L. Pollard, has announced the appointment of Julius L. Smith, Jr. as the school's new men's basketball head coach. The appointment marks the reinstatement of the UDC Firebirds men's basketball program, which was suspended for the 2004-05 season because of concerns about reported ineligibility issues. Coach Smith, a native Washingtonian, graduated from Archbishop John Carroll High School in 1973. He then went on to attend Morehouse College graduating in 1979 with a bachelor's degree in psychology. After graduating from college, Smith served in various athletic related capacities, including working as assistant coach at several colleges. His last coaching position was at Indiana University where he was an assistant to Head Coach Mike Davis, during the 2000-01 season.
