­ South Carolina State 27, Alabama State 14
The defending SWAC champs proved no match for the MEAC co-champs who held ASU (0-1, 0-0 SWAC E) to 24 rushing yards in the SWAC/MEAC Challenge. SCSU QB Cleveland McCoy (9-19-1, 175 passing yds., 9 carries, 68 yds., 1 rushing TD) led the SCSU (1-0, 0-0 MEAC) offense that racked up 416 yards including 241 on the ground. ASU QB Tavaris Jackson completed 16 of 33 passes for 255 yards including TDs of 79 and 30 yards.

­ St. Augustine's 33, Shaw 0
St. Augustine's (2-0, 0-0 CIAA W) dominated cross-town Raleigh rival, defending CIAA champ Shaw (0-2, 0-0 CIAA E), backing up last year's 34-6 win with a shutout. QB Darrell Nesbitt (6-14-1) threw for 203 yards and three TDs (38, 64, 90) and Travoris Carter ran 73 yards to paydirt in the rout. PK Arty Lemon added FGs of 19 and 38 yards to complete the scoring. SAC WR Eddie Montgomery had three receptions for 156 yards including the 64 and 90-yard scoring passes. Shaw had 34 rushing yards in 25 attempts and had three passes picked off.

­ Howard 20, Winston-Salem State 7
The MEAC's top defense, Howard (1-0, 0-0 MEAC) registered eight sacks and and one interception and held WSSU (0-2, 0-0 CIAA W) to just 58 total yards of offense and three first downs. Howard QB Ronald Venters passed for 217 yards (20-37-0) and one TD. WSSU scored its only points when it blocked a first quarter punt and returned it for a TD.

­ Hampton 20, Jackson State 6
Hampton (1-0, 0-0 MEAC) ground out 232 rushing yards and got TD runs of 1 and 41 yards from Ardell Daniels (22 car., 109 yds.) to defeat Jackson State (0-1, 0-0 SWAC E) at the Detroit Classic. PK Andrew Paterini added FGs of 25 and 33 yards for the Pirates who gave up a 16-play 80-yard drive for a TD in the first quarter. That was practically all the Tigers, who finished with just 133 yards of offense, could muster.

­ Delaware State 21, Florida A&M 17
DSU (1-0, 1-0 MEAC) scored the final nine points of the game to give new FAMU head coach Rubin Carter a rude welcome to the MEAC knocking off the Rattlers in Tallahassee. PK Peter Gaertner had four FGs to stake the Hornets to an early 12-0 lead. Both teams had safeties but DSU's winning points came on a 2-yard Rodney Roy TD with 8:42 left.

­ N. C. Central 23, N. C. A&T 22
NC A&T (0-1, 0-0 MEAC) freshman placekicker Joe Arroyo missed a 43-yard FG wide right with :08 left to allow NCCU (2-0, 0-0 CIAA W) to escape with its second Aggie/Eagle Classic win in Raleigh Monday. NCCU took the lead for good on Torrey Ross's winding 46-yard TD reception where he broke four tackles to reach paydirt with 2:47 left. NCCU QB Adrian Warren threw for 269 yards and two scores while RB Greg Pruitt ran for 130 yards on 23 totes. A&T tailback Brandon Sweeney rambled for 150 yards on 32 carries and scored all three Aggie TDs (11, 4, 26).

­ Virginia State 34, Norfolk State 6
VSU (1-1, 0-1 CIAA E) spoiled Pete Adrian's MEAC head coaching debut and made the CIAA 2-2 vs. the MEAC over the weekend with the win in Norfok.

­ Miss. Valley State 30, Arkansas-Pine Bluff 17
QB Aries Nelson hit on 19 of 25 passes for 260 yards and 3 TDs in the Delta Devils (1-0, 1-0 SWAC E) opening day win over UAPB (0-1, 0-1 SWAC W).
